Route breakdown shows receiver made significant growth in 2014
Thought I would share this write up from The Advocate about Kenny Stills. Good stuff....

With Kenny's growth last year, I can't wait to see the growth he has this year. I dont think some realize how fortunate we are to have him in the Black & Gold.

It’s often said that NFL players make the most growth between their first and second years in the league.
quote:
This is what we saw happen with New Orleans Saints wide receiver Kenny Stills during his second season. Perhaps some of growth toward becoming a complete receiver last season was the result of being asked to do more as a sophomore, but the numbers and film show he was also in a better position to accomplish those tasks.
quote:
This case can be made by simply saying to watch his film and see the different things he was doing as a sophomore as opposed to being a rookie, but perhaps the best way to illustrate this point is by looking at the additional routes he ran during his sophomore season.
quote:
As a rookie, Stills made his living running go routes. In 2014, Stills made his living in a completely different fashion. He no longer ran straight down the field and used his athleticism as his primary weapon. He was asked to be more of a tactician and use his route-running ability to get open.
quote:
This variety shows up the numbers. His most popular and effective route were hitches. He was targeted on 23 of these (29 percent) and caught 21 of the passes for 222 yards. These were followed by out routes (10 catches on 15 targets), go routes, and quick outs (five catches on seven targets). Stills was also targeted five times each on in routes (five catches), comebacks (four catches), and post routes (two catches).
quote:
But even with the increased variety, Stills remained deadly on go routes last season. He made eight catches on 10 targets for 254 yards and scored three touchdowns on these plays. Brees’ 156.3 quarterback rating when throwing to Stills on go routes was his highest rating on any route by any receiver or tight end on the roster. Brees’ 112 rating when throwing to Stills was his highest rating with any wide receiver.

Yea, Stills and Armstead both had that second year jump. Hopefully guys like Powell and Baptiste can do the same, or at least improve some. I also hope Jenkins will, it usually takes a DT an extra year or 2 to make that big leap forward than other positions in the NFL.

He's a very good #3 WR. Glad to have him

I loved the pick when we drafted him. He and Brees seem to have a great chemistry together. Reminds me of Brees and Moore but Kenny has the athleticism to run the deeper routes.

Good stuff. Stills, Cooks, Graham should be a great receiving group for years to come. Hopefully this year we can snag a big target on the outside at some point in the mid-late rounds of the draft, i.e. Martvis Bryant last year.

Toon really seemed to be coming into his own towards the end of the season, he may turn into that guy.

I won't be holding my breath on that. He's either really good or really shitty

I agree, but I'm still holding out hope.

It would be really nice to grab an outside posseion guy (Colston replacement). With Stills, Cooks and a younger Colston replacement, that would be a nice young group of receivers with different skill sets.

How about this kid?
Highlight Reel
(Ignore the really shitty music)
Deontay Greenberry, WR, Houston
Height: 6-3 Weight: 200
Projected 40 Time: 4.55
Projected Round (2015): 3-5
2/14/15: Greenberry totaled 72 receptions for 841 yards and six touchdowns in 2014. He has good size, but if he has the speed to separate from NFL-caliber cornerbacks isn't clear. Greenberry should have returned for his senior year, but he entered the 2015 NFL Draft. His stock could be hurt by not receiving a Combine invite.
8/27/14: Greenberry was the first Scout.com "five star" recruit to sign with Houston. He made an immediate impact as a freshman in 2012 with 47 receptions for 569 yards and three touchdowns. Greenberry upped his game as a sophomore with 82 receptions for 1,202 yards and 11 touchdowns.
The junior has size to go with speed. It wouldn't be surprising if Greenberry has massive production in 2014.

I sure hope so. Having those three young receivers stepping up would be great.
