My favorite shave soap so far:

No need for a mug, just lather in the container.

I've got myself and Dad birth year. Grandfathers were 1920. It gets a little tougher and costlier at that age.

If you were in the service you can also get military issue from WW1 to Vietnam. Army green for army and marines and Navy blue.

I am all ate up with this and can go all day.

Try Taylor of Olde Bond Street sandalwood. It smells better than Proraso red.

Proraso is awesome though.

Ok I want to try the DE razors. Someone point me in the right direction. (Website)(razors)(shave cream or oil)(brush, cup) and whatever else I would need in my situation. I have a very sensitive neck. I have thick dark whiskers. I only shave about 3 times a week because of the razor burn. And I only shave in the shower. I've got a nice big shower with plenty of room and it is much more convenient for me.

I got into DE razors bc of the long shaving thread on this forum. I'd had it with razor burn.

Picked up Edwin jagger handle and boar brush (there are different levels of these so just read about them). Astra and Feather platinum blades, and Taylor of Old Bond Street Almond scent cream. The cream costs me like $17 and I just started a new can today after 8 months on the first one. I spent bout 10-15 in blades and am set for over a year as I use 1 blade per week

Bought everything on Amazon.

Edit: I did pick up a small thing of aftershave lotion by Dove from Walmart. Shave 3x per week and haven't had razor burn in 8 months.

Not recommended if you're on a diet. That stuff smells amazing.

I started DE shaving in ~September '13. I've gone through 2 Taylor of Old Bond Street cans (sandalwood and lemon & lime) and just starting on my third (Mr Taylor's or Eton College. I forget. It was shipped to me mistakenly when I ordered Rose). They usually run $11-15 or so, and that gives me close to about the same 8mo average you got. Even if I were just breaking even, the scents are enjoyable and the shave is fun.

I'm also about tired of the DE sampler blade pack I bought. Considering grabbing 5-15 Bluebird and Feathers to weigh them against the Astras I'm so fond of before investing in a 100-200pk of one kind of razor.

Gillette Silver Blue are great blades as well. Almost Feather sharp but IMO much smoother.

Here's the thing. Every guy has a different perfect blade depending on his personal face and preferences. His personal best will change as he gets better working the razor.

Go to tryablade.com and get 2 blades each of their top 10 and try one each till you find one that you love. Use it for a month or two then try a different blade. Maybe you just go right back to what you were using, but maybe you just found your new favorite blade. The biggest appeal of DE shaving is the different variety or everything. keep mixing it up to try new combinations. They will mix and match whatever individual blades you want for 10-20 cents apiece. It's stupid cheap, I don't know how they are in business. $2 flat rate shipping.

I, and many people, find the Persona Lab Blue blade to be the best. They are sharp, but not quite as sharp as Feather platinum blades. I find them to be very smooth as well.

westcoastshaving.com is a great place to pick up gear. try some artisan soaps as well. THAT's what makes it enjoyable, don't just get the big name brand Proraso soap. I can give you some good artisan name brands if you want.

If you are worried about money sink, start with a Omega 10066 brush. It's $9 from west coast. It's a little stiff at first, but you have to let it break in and then it really shines. It's got a great backbone, but ones the tips start to get split ends it is just smooth on the face. I get great face lathers with it. That's another thing, make sure you try both lathering in a bowl and applying to the face, and lathering directly on the face. Some people's face is too sensitive for the constant hard brushing against the face to lather, but some enjoy the massage and get a better shave from working the facial hair. Personally, I always use a face lather.

Remember that this very well may suck for you at first, getting burns and cuts. You have to give it a chance until you develop the skill to know the right blade angle and pressure, and to make sure you are developing a good lather, not just a blob of wet soap.

Was going to suggest the site. It looks great, but I have never used it.

I guess you approve.

Another vote for Tryablade.com.

I'm enjoying the Voskhod russian blades right now.

As for getting started, I agree with the razors mentioned previous although I'd stay away from the Target Pawn Stars razor. You can get a Merkur for about $30 off Amazon, a sample pack of blades for about $10, and Walgreen and Walmart both sell mug/brush/soap kits for under $10. Nothing fancy but it doesn't need to be. You can upgrade slowly from there.

Take a few minutes in the morning, maybe 10 and realize that a shave can actually be enjoyable. I'll bet that after the first time, you'll be slightly impressed how a good shave feels. Give another few weeks of learning and you'll be trying to convince others to try it.
