The items people rave about are all chicken, pork, and vegetable items. I'd hardly consider a different method of cooking or a different sauce to be "adventurous", but everyone is different.

The raved about items on here seem to be the Chong Qing Chicken, Spicy Cumin Pork, and Garlic Sauce Eggplant.

I love the latter two. I think the first is good, but it was pretty spicy.

I considered going beef last time.

That's the great thing about Omi: pretty much every style/sauce is offered on other meats/vegetables.

I saw that the garlic sauce used on the eggplant is offered on some meat items as well.

Don't get me wrong, I like Omi, but honestly I feel like it's somewhat overrated by the people on this board. I really don't care for the cumin dishes (too salty); the garlic eggplant, while good, is almost eggplant overload in my opinion; and the Chong Qing chicken is also good, but it prefer a similar dish, the spicy dry fried beef at 9 Dragon Noodle House. I also like 9DNH's hot and sour soup better, and that's why I tend to go there more often than Omi. I do like Omi's sweet and sour dishes made with the dark vinegar.

I'm by no means an expert, but I do seek out Sichuan restaurants when traveling. They are somewhat hard to come by, but I've eaten at 8 or 9 of them. Omi isn't the #1 best, and it lacks some key dishes like Dan Dan noodles, however it is a very good stand-in and unmatched by anything in the state. I don't think it is overrated at all. Peter Chang's was the best I've ever had, but that requires leaving the time zone. That said I've not had the dishes you mentioned at 9 Dragon but am intrigued.

I highly recommend the spicy dry fried beef, and they have some good liver dishes, as well.

Another good place is Little Chinatown in Kenner...

Now that I have had both I can say that 9 Dragon Noodle House isn't even on the same level as Omi. They aren't even comparable. 9DNH is more like take out Chinese with an upgrade. Omi is a legit sit down restaurant. Nothing wrong with preferring the fast food style of 9DNH, it is certainly better than picking up at China Star or the million other to-go Chinese places but it isn't on the same level as Omi.

I really like Omi, and it is always dead when I go there on weekend nights. Love their Kung Pao chicken, I tried their cumin chicken last time and it was good as well. The Double Bubble with the check was a little odd.

Sorry, we'll have to agree to disagree on that one. While the majority of 9DNH's offerings aren't on par with Omi, there are a few that are just as good, if not better, than anything Omi offers.

What do you recommend from Little Chinatown? I've only eaten what others have ordered so it's pretty basic stuff, but I've never found their "Americanized" dishes all that great.

Funny you say that. My buddy took me to an Asian restaurant owned by a friend of his in north LA. I have done Marketing / Advertising consulting and the owner sat down at our table and asked me what I thought of the place. I started polite and then my buddy told me to let him have it and I did. The food in the place was literally gourmet Asian but the atmosphere made OMI look like Commander's Palace. Plastic tablecloths, 1980's neon beer signs, posters unframed and stuck to the wall with thumbtacks, etc. The guy literally had no clue. To answer your question about taking criticism, he went and grabbed two bottles of good wine and a notepad. He wrote down everything I said. It wasn't amazing as if I had some grand insight, it was amazing that he had never thought about any of the things I pointed out.

That is an awesome story. I'd have to pinch myself if that happened to me.

They seem to getting good business these days based on my last few visits. We went for dinner tonight and the dining room was pretty much full.

Got the Steamed Flounder for the first time and it was excellent. Maybe not as savory as some of the other dishes like Black Pepper Beef or Garlic Sauce Eggplant, but very satisfying and easy on the stomach. I'll definitely order it again. Everything I've had there has been top-notch. Great place.
