I think the only thing we child proofed was the cabinet under the sink where the chemicals were. I wanted to lock the door to the master bedroom so they couldn't bother me in the middle of the night but their momma nixed that one.

We also invested in a home security system.
This pretty much resolves the problem of kids going outside unless parents turn the sound off. At 4 AM with the alarm ON, it wakes everyone up and no 4 yr old is going to know the code to turn it off.

Such a sad story.
I do wonder how many people who childproof their houses so carefully make sure that other houses they visit are also childproofed? I know that when we went on vacation when the kids were little, we would bring stuff with us to secure hotel/condo doors, but we never added door handle locks to our in-laws house when they were watching them for a short period. Their cabinets with chemicals all had childproof locks on them, but not the doors.

This is where a home alarm system is helpful even if it's not connected. Alarm is set every night so my child can't leave without me knowing. Door chimes are on all day so I can't miss when a door or window is open. Ours is connected to a monitoring service but I would pay to have a system installed for those reasons alone even if I didn't plan to pay monthly for monitoring.

Dude. They were asleep. I could see this happening if the kid is determined.
Heartbreaking without ripping anyone.

When we had kids we put a baby monitor in the room until age 5, put child locks on their doors at night basically locking them in their room, put slide locks high on every exterior door, and set the security alarm every night. We have four. So far none have frozen to death in the middle of the night.
True these parents are deserving of sympathy. But they are also certified dipshits. It is entirely reasonable to think that your kid might do stuff like this in the middle of the night while you sleep. That's why you as a parent take precautions.

I didn't do all that shite and my kids are still alive. Just this Saturday I kicked them out of the house and told them I didn't want to see them till the sun came down.

I lived on the border of Kisatchie NF when my son was 4. My wife woke me up at 2 am because she heard him crying and went to check on him. He'd gone outside and was standing in the driveway as if lost. By the sweat on him he'd been out there a while. Scared the shite out of me, just glad he didn't wander off in the woods.
Learned from experience - you can never be too careful with kids.

For being asleep in the middle of the night and perhaps forgetting to deadbolt the door?
Posted on 3/2/15 at 5:12 pm to TIGRLEE
I remember sneaking out of my house when I was little. My dad found me and screamed his lungs out at me. Scared the piss out of me enough that I never pulled that shite again.

Forgetting doesn't excuse fault.

My sister in law did this when she was 5. Went out the kitchen door, climbed on the washer and opened the garage door and went down the street to play in the park. She wanted to play and everyone else was asleep.
Freaks me out to know how relatively easily kids can break out of a locked house.

Well don't even know if that's what happened. It's just as likely that the kid unlocked the door himself. All of you placing blame are a bunch self righteous assholes. It's a tragedy. Nothing more, nothing less.

frick man, I forgot not to drive drunk. I forgot not to shoot that guy. I forgot to pay my bills.
^ None of which are acceptable excuses.
I forgot to ensure my child gets to grow up by providing him a safe environment in which to thrive.
^ Somehow ok to you.

So forgetting to lock your door, which by the way we don't know is what happened, should he illegal like shooting people and drinking and driving?
Posted on 3/2/15 at 5:28 pm to GeauxxxTigers23
Of course it's a tragedy. That doesn't excuse the parents from fault though.
There were quite a few harsh comments from others earlier. I'm not one of them. Living with the fact that a lapse in their home security likely caused their child's death will be hell enough for them.
But you saying "nobody" is to blame is completely off base here. It's our job as parents to do everything possible to keep our children safe. Freak accidents happen, yes, but these parents could have and should have done more to secure their home to keep their kid from getting out.
No one is saying that. All we're saying is it could have and should have been prevented. And the parents are the reason it wasn't prevented.

What if he unlocked the door himself. You can't protect kids from everything. Accidents Can always happen. I didn't do much child proofing in my house except for locking the cabinet with chemicals and stuff. My kids are still alive.

In today's sue-happy world, there's the belief that for every accident someone is truly at fault.
