When I was a kid we caught several that size with a dip net out of a subdivision lake off Highland Road when my friends first moved there. We kept them in the big aquarium they set up and netted minnows to feed them. Talk about a lightning fast strike. Really cool fish.

I caught a pretty good size one last year here in FL; you damn near have to kill them to remove your lure.

If you don't mind, where was this lake located?
I'm in the process of setting up a freshwater aquarium full of local fish for my kids like I had when I was youger and would love to put a juvi pickeral in it.

I know a place we can go right now and catch one in less than 10 casts on a yellow and black snagless sally (if anyone else here knows what that is).
That will work as will anything that flashes or rattles. They are basically little pike. I think they are three species I have caught in the South the chain the bar and one other. I have caught them 3-4 pounds and are really fun to catch as will go airbone on you. Usually around stagnant water by piers lilly pads etc. Fun as hell to catch, but just like their bigger cousin the Northern Pike (Caught these over 20 lbs) suck to eat.
Here are the other two' Red fin Pickeral.
and glass pickerel but I swear i used to catch a brown like pickerel with vertical bars running down its side too.

Also pretty good at determining whether a body of water has a healthy choupique population.

No nipi-didis. I think I still have one left from a log time ago.
