Some people won't understand that. Unless you're bucking phases, you'll only get one leg of the 110

Dude, you can buy toughless voltage testers for pretty cheap so you don't have to hope that you flipped the right switch. I suggest that anyone doing any wiring do this.

If you are talking about a "tweety bird", (a pen like meter that lights up and tweets around live current), you just gave bad advice.

Tweety birds should never be used to determine if the power is off, only to determine if the power is on. Its like a pregnancy test, it doesn't have false positives, but it can give you false negatives, meaning it may not pick up the current, giving you the false sense that the power is off.

While I appreciate your attempt to share your knowledge and experience about electricity, be advised that some of the folks to whom you are writing experiences with electricity can be best summed up in the following image:

I'll use the NCV followed with the probes on my DVOM. Never gotten zapped that way. Worst I remember was an old maintenence guy at work poking around in a 480V pannel with a screwdriver. Flash, pop, and no more screwdriver tip...

live dead live

Worst I have been hit was from a test ground wire that broke loose from a 500kV circuit breaker we were testing in the switchyard. Purely static shock, but knocked me on my arse. Was glad it just swung away from me after hitting me.

I don't know what runs to a dryer, but I got hit with that. "Stuck" for at least 2-3 seconds that seemed like minutes and though I had a heart attack. Was numb from the left side down to my fingertips until the following morning. Also, did not get superpowers which was really the most upsetting aspect of the ordeal.

True story. Camping out one night behind my house, two buddies and I go inside late to get some milk and cookies. We had a commercial milk dispenser like you would see at a malt shop with two metal handles you pushed up to get milk from. It was in our pantry and across from it was an ice maker. One had a short and if you touched both at the same time, zappo. Well I talk the younger of the group to do such, telling him you would feel something you have never felt before. Thinking he would touch and pull off quick, he grabbed the handle of the milk machine and the threshhold of the ice maker. He stood there a good 10 seconds shaking like a salt shaker. Had to push him to break him free.

I'm sure you had a "Hawthorne" moment (some REALLY choice words) but by that time you had let go. It's the amps that "get" you and if the juice crosses your heart (left hand/to right foot) that's bad. Your body can take a jolt usually more than you think. Now, quit put tweezers in the outlets...

BSEE sent out a safety alert a few months ago regarding an offshore worker that was killed by 110v while recharging some battery packs. Stopped his heart on contact. Crazy stuff.
