Translation - LSU needed to be ahead by more than a touchdown at the end of game when his defense took the field.

I haven't read this whole thread, but every Defensive Coordinator strives for 3 and outs and shutouts ... every single one. In fact, that's what they're paid for. No, it's not realistic to think that it will happen every series and every game, but as a DC, you don't go out and say that the offense puts "unnecessary strain" on your defense. Way to burn bridges on your way out the door.

Those rankings already exclude cupcake teams. Hence the asterisk.

You and i both know any stat that paints Miles' tenure in a positive light, will be shite on.

If Chavis was so bad and thought the offense was putting unnecessary strain on his defense, he was sitting on the side of Coach Cameron, he should have done what Buddy Ryan did to Kevin Gilbride.

I get him wanting to coach at a school that scores points. The issues is that his D will see similar number of snaps on the field do to the amount of time that gets run off the clock when the O goes three incompletions and 11 seconds run off the clock.

His defense could not save back-to-back home games against Alabama. He wasn't getting security and he didn't deserve a raise. It is really that simple.

In some scenarios, D's use the clock to their advantage and do not necessarily play for 3 and outs. Just sayin'.

Agreed. Whether they won or lost, the defense was judged based upon their performance as a whole......despite what the offense did. If anything, Chavis benefitted from a team that consistently had a TOP advantage, which ultimately led to better results. Let's see what he can do without that advantage and without that talent. Time will tell.

He had already been through this with Fulmer at Tennessee.

I like this:
"Chavis' lawsuit against LSU looks like it has as many holes as his third-down defense."

Odd that this strain didn't show up until LSU declined to match the aggie offer. Chavis had no intention of ending up at aTm. He knows its a bad fit.

Um. Look, I'm not trying to ride Chavis' jock here, but that's just a retarded assertion. The ONLY statistic that can strain a defense is TOP?

I mean....speaking generally and not just about LSU, you're saying that inability to score or maybe tons of turnovers couldn't cause a strain on a defense?

I mean hey, if I'm a DC and my offense is putting up 40 a game that's going to make my job a LOT easier. And, if my offense is scoring 10 per game, that's a LOT more challenging.

Um look, I get that you obviously didn't read this thread because the idiotic statement you just made has been addressed in about 30 different ways. His job as a DC is to stop the opposing offense in 3 plays, period. It doesn't matter if we score 0 points or 50 points, the intensity level of the defense should always be the same at an elite SEC program. Even if we had an offense that was shut out every single game, it wouldn't effect Chavis in the least.

As I said, his job as a defensive coordinator is to stop the other team from scoring. If his defense plays well and the offense loses the game, Miles and Cameron are the ones that end up taking the flak. And yea, turnovers would put more strain on the defense but that doesn't apply to Chavis because LSU rarely turns the ball over. TOP is the only statistic that directly effects the defensive coordinator's ability to do HIS job and Chavis' job wasn't to outscore the other team, his job is to stop the other team on third down and the only way that the offense can effect that is by A. Turning the ball over and leaving him with a short field which didn't apply during his tenure at LSU and B. Having a shitty TOP that causes the defense to get tired out
