80-78 in Birmingham over Kentucky. The game was close to a "sellout", but because of a snow storm about the only fans their were UK and LSU fans who were staying downtown near the Civic Center. This made up for losing to Kentucky 6 days earlier at the buzzer to Kyle Macy and friend giving Kentucky the SEC regular season title.
With the win LSU, and Kentucky, received #1 Seeds in the second year of NCAA seeding in basketball. LSU was in the Midwest, and Kentucky was in the Mideast.
Box Score: March 1, 1980 AP #2 Kentucky vs AP#5 LSU
And to truly get in the mood for the era and times, here's Earth, Wind and Fire's "In the Stone" which most pep bands played at the time and a lot of college BB games used for bumper music.

That is not our only tournament championship is it?

Only 4 other times have we played in the finals -- besides the win in 1980. 2 before the tourney first ended in '52 and then in 1987 and 1993.

And each time it was against kentucky right? Or at least the last three were.

LSU lost to Alabama in 1987 at the old Omni, 69-62. That was the year Dale claimed he didn't sleep the whole time in Atlanta. Paid off as had we not made the final, its very likely we wouldn't have made the tourney.
In the semis we beat Georgia, 89-88 in 2ots after blowing a 63-43 lead with about 15:00 left. Georgia missed two tap ins at the end of the second overtime before the game finally ended.

I was there. I was 14 and when we won the semi-final my brother-in-law called my sister to fly up and come see the final.
I was staying at her house that weekend and she felt sorry for me and begged my brother-in-law to let her bring me too.
One of my favorite LSU sports memories of all time. Two top-5 teams, and the Cat fans of course outnumbered us 4-1.
Cookie Man got physical with Bowie early and he was pretty much intimidated the rest of the game.
Dwayne Scales went off in the second half. He hit about 5 straight elbow jumpers and the Cats could not stop him.
It was indeed snowing outside but the shooting was hot. Both teams shot easily over 50%.
My sister let me party with them for a bit after the game than paid a cab to take me to the hotel after the game while they partied all night. I was just glad to be there.

Tigers looked Final 4 bound. However, behind the scenes, The Astronaut, Dewayne Scales was rubbing shoulders once again with an agent and in the Elite 8 game against eventual NC, Louisville, Scales became a ball hog which upset the Tigers almost perfect balance leading up to that game. Dale sent Scales packing after the game and told the team in a meeting the next day that they would play better without Scales and his huge ego. They did in fact, reaching the Final Four the following season, though fate proved unkind once again as Macklin's injury suffered in the final minutes of the elite 8 against Witchita St. proved to be the team's undoing against Indiana.

The monicker was as much for his flakey personality as his skywalking vertical leap.
But when he wanted to play, he could be unreal. In that Kentucky game...he wanted to play.

You know what was unique about his team? Some may say Scales Some Macklin but we had a true point guard Ethan Martin- without him - they lose

Best LSU point guard ever.

Huck was awesome! Loved watching him run that 4 corner stall.

Then he must have been a music major. I was in the Court Jesters, an interesting group of former and current GBFTL members that Charlie Roberts (yeah him) directed. As the basketball team started getting really good and packing the PMac, Stephen Detzel (working for his Daddy the AD) decided to boot us and use the primo seats (courtside) to reward music major recruits. He was also responsible for moving our football seats off into the corner of the end zone.
As for that game, a carload of us were staying at my Aunt's house and had to watch the final game on her TV less than 15 minutes from the arena because all the roads were closed. One of the guys in our crew was a Wanker and had never seen snow-he was playing in it like a 5 year old. And I'll never forget the earlier games watching Kentucky fans grabbing everyone walking out not dressed in blue and asking them for their remaining tickets. There was a real rivalry forming because Daddy Dale had teams that could finally compete with them toe to toe.
ETA: second the sentiments on Ethan Martin. Watched him several times in HS (in our District) and he was just so smooth on the court. Always looked like he was about half asleep, but he was a good as I've seen in P&G running an offense.

I was there with 5 friends , all of us LSU grads and we sat mid court . The center aisle separated Kentucky and LSU fans. Before the game Kentucky fans were HUGE dicks to LSU fans... After the game the roles were reversed and we were in the face of every Kentucky fan we saw , and we were the dicks. But nobody would react to 6 big guys out of control

Thanks for rekindling the fond memories. That team was loaded. Agree with others sentiments about Ethan Martin. He was one cool cat. Had those sleepy eyes and look of indifference on his face...then in a split second would blow by a defender into the lane with a kick out to Macklin, Scales or Sims. That team was classic playing inside-out. It's interesting Coach Johnny Jones style today.

A true point guard would make this years team significantly better.
