My black and tan coon hound didn't make the list. Not a good childrens dog. They bite first and ask questions later. My female can crush an armadillo shell. Very ill tempered dog.

This list is based off of breeds registered with AKC. It doesn't mean that the French Bulldog is more popular in the world.

Makes sense. More expensive the breed the more likely you are to have it registered

Plus, it is flawed by calling it the most popular. If 100 people each have 1 pug registered as opposed to 50 people each having 3 beagles registered, the list will count the beagle as more popular even though only 50 people compared to 100 have them.

German Shepherd is the greatest breed & I don't get the Lab thing. Is it perceived to be more child friendly?

What are the great qualities of the Lab?

Had a German Shepherd as a child & the natural protective instincts/loyalty/intelligence were amazing..

She would not allow others to shake our hands , pat us on the back, parents spank us ,etc.........If she thought we were being harmed/threatened she would attack .(Although I realize that could be dangerous in some situations).

Due to overbreeding of Shepherds I may pick a a Belgian Malinois as my next dog.

my aussie shepherd mix has turned out to be more like a German than an Aussie or border collie. he has the most imposing bark and growl i've ever heard and has filled out to an imposing stature. so freaking smart, loyal, caring, etc.

I've got a couple in the top five.

I also have one of these.

The dog might be the most intelligent dog I've ever had. He isn't trainable, he doesn't listen all that well, but he's a damned genius.

He can open doors by grabbing doorknobs in his mouth. He opens cabinets and peanut containers. He tugs curtains to the side to see.

He also happens to be very gentle and whines like a very young puppy.

Having seen what was left of the coyotes who jumped the fence while we we're at dinner one night thinking he was that whining puppy, he is also not to be fricked with. Neighbors Golden was killed. The big man killed two in the fence and three died back outside the fence. Haven't heard coyotes around since.

I have had multiple labs. My yellow is 8. When she goes, I will either have a Vizsla or Labradoodle. Damn the shedding of my English lab.

Those are officially called mutts no matter what some designer doggie breeder wants to name it.

Mutts probably should be in the top 5 at the very least, probably #1.

My 10 year old daughter wants a German Shepherd Dog. She sees them on the tv show Cops all the time and she thinks they are the most beautiful awesome dogs.

Beautiful dog, excellent temperament.
Just never forget that there is a reason they have been used by the military and law enforcement for the last 60+ years

Had a lab for 16 years. Best dog in the world. Now have two borther labs and they're crazy as hell together but loyal as any dog I've seen. Love me to death too.

My American Staffordshire Terrier has been an amazing pet. Such a great breed.

I don't know which breed I'll get next. Bloodhound, Giant Schnauzer, Black Russian Terrier, American Bulldog, the Kangal, and the Black Mouth Cur are the top candidates right now.
