Credit Karma is free. Updates once a month, that's the only email I get from them. It does pair you with tons of credit card offers while you're on the site, but I haven't gotten any spam. No complaints

I suscribe to transunion, which is one of three reporting agencies. You can subscribe for a week and cancel before they charge you to avoid a fee. I keep it to periodically watch for id theft. There is also equifax and another one I can't remember. It may be a little more secure than mint.com, but I'm not sure.

You mean the same company/website you provide all your login and password credentials for various online banking accounts?
