You're married, no kids. You'll be there for only 3 years and then can move anywhere. Job opportunities not a factor and you can afford to live wherever you'd like within the city.

Also, you're from south Louisiana and most of your family is within an hour of Nola (if that matters to you).

Go.

Charlotte > Nola > Birmingham, and I live in Birmingham. Nola and Charlotte are both great cities it really just depends on what you want. Charlotte is more of a big city feel and is becoming the major city on the east coast (Not in the northeast).

ETA: The perk of Birmingham is the cost of living is great. I bought a condo downtown with a very average salary at the age of 22. You aren't doing that in Charlotte or Nola. Rents in Birmingham outside of Mountain Brook and downtown are below $1,000 for 1BR

The being from LA aside thing, it'd probably be

Charlotte
Bham
Nola

for me. Currently live in midtown Atlanta, about to move to Buckhead.

Birmingham is way underrated on this site. It's head and shoulders better than BR. MB, Vestavia and Homewood all have public schools that are completely acceptable. Neighborhoods are good, it's got enough to do, climate is good. Close to Atlanta, mountains and good beaches.

Downsides are AL state government and Bama fans.

Birmingham has actually gotten a lot nicer. It's still behind compared to Charlotte & New Orleans but it's getting better each year.

Charlotte for the change of pace.

Then come back to LA and live in NOLA.

B'ham is not bad at all. Lots of Bama/Auburn though if you can stand it.

I really like Birmingham. Charlotte seems kind of dull. I live in New Orleans but I don't know if I really like the yuppie utopia that it's heading towards.

I would live in New Orleans until I had a family. Then I would GTFO and not look back.
