Aeronautical engineering if the college route.
Actually some colleges have planes and you can major in aviation pilot. I know North Dakota State and I think one in Florida as well.
It's really hard to fly in the military. The big thing when I was in PS was to go to India and fly there for a start up airliner. They were hiring ATP pilots with relatively low hours. You go there for a few years then try to find a job in the states or Europe.

A friend of mine went into a civilian pilot school to get his licenses. He came out of school with $150k in debt and could only find a job as an instructor for private pilots. The challenge is building up enough flight-hours to earn a serious look from the commercial airlines. Also, median pay for beginning pilots is pretty low. You will be challenged financially for sure.
I also have a friend who is currently in flight school for the Navy. He's making around 60K plus hazard pay while getting his education for free. You can go to college and earn a degree in anything while participating in ROTC. Then, simply apply to flight school after college.

LAtech has or at least "had" an aviation scholarship program

Auburn has a program as well I think.
Not going the military route will result in working at a regional for peanuts or going overseas to get your hours. Like any worthwhile career, you have to put in a lot of time and effort to get to the top of your field.

The successful ones that I know did this:
Went to a good College (and joined ROTC)
Graduated college and went to OCS (Navy/Air Force)
Retired with full military benefits and started flying for FedEx/UPS and had another well paying job on the side.
OT Ballers go straight to the Air Force Academy or Annapolis right out of high school.

Step 1: Obtain a College Degree
While a college degree is not always required to get started in this career, the BLS reports that it is common for employers to look for individuals with a college degree. There are several colleges that offer bachelor's degree programs in aviation or aeronautics in the United States. Regardless of major, students must complete coursework in physics, aeronautical engineering, mathematics and English. It's important to enroll in an aviation or aeronautics program that has been approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

That's where my buddies went. Florida Institute of Technology is what it was called. Flew to visit me in BR a lot just to get hours in. Name of the school may have changed.

I read an article the other day FAA is trying to hire a bunch of air traffic controllers, no experience necessary... obviously not a pilot but pay was around 100k average salary
Posted on 2/27/15 at 9:49 am to Macintosh504
guard unit with a four degree in anything is the current correct answer, my degree is in CivE but that was not a requirement, just a coincidence
