My dad wrote me a letter in Basic training. He ended it with "millions of people have already done it, and you're better than most of them."

SSG Alonzo: "Don't frick up."

ETA: During patrol he calls a halt. I run back to him and take a knee while pulling security. I look at him and all he says is, "H, what are we doing with our lives?" I didn't say anything just ran to back to the front and give the hand arm signal to follow me.

"Remember you're there to get a piece of paper."

Dad wasn't very motivating.

Do the thing you want to do the least first.

Basic advice to just get the hard stuff out of the way. The rest of the day will be cake.

"You will never make anything of your life. I will have to pay to support you and your wife and what ever snotty nose kids you have"- My dad right after I graduated from LSU. He was pissed that I didn't get a degree in engineering or pre med.

Needless to say it had an impact on me and that situation never happened. I may not be baller status but I make fair coin.

quote:

Old rich guy I used to work for told me: "You never learn anything when you are talking."

I really like that one.

You can look to your left and look to your right and there is always someone worse off than you.

If you want to soar with the eagles, you can't hoot with the owls.

Inch by inch, life's a cinch. Yard by yard, life is hard.

Don't get mad, get even.

Stop living for the weekends.

If you only truly enjoy 2 days a week you'll never be happy.

My grandfather always used to say, "Don't borrow trouble." That sticks with me when I start worrying about the future or over things I have no control over.

"The people who talk the most know the least"

and

"If a man tells you how happy, rich or important he is, he's not trying to convince you, he's trying to convince himself."

I borrow one from Woody Allen, '90 percent of life is just showing up' and he's right. And I added for my sons; 'then do your best, keep a positive attitude and good things happen'.

My Dad had for me; 'You'd screw up a peanut butter sandwich', wow what motivation to get the hell out of the house ASAP and make it on my own.

Old Duncan Kinchen, cm professor at LSU, told us one day in our senior pm class: "This will be a short class today and there's no females in here so I can say this right. Never dip your pen in the company ink. (Pauses for dramatic effect) Nothing wil frick up a company quicker than when you start banging people you work with. Have a nice Friday. "
