I'm applying to a master's program and I need two academic letters of recommendation. I completed my bachelor's over 5 years ago at a school with 40k+ students, so it's unlikely that anyone there remembers me well enough to qualify. I took one class in my spare time last semester, and I'm taking three catch-up classes right now in preparation for my program.

Would it be appropriate to ask one of my current professors for a recommendation? I've only been in the class/known her for a little over a month, but I've done well and have the highest grade in the class. It seems too early, but I'm not sure what else I would do.

I would take one from her if she agrees to write one. Like you said, she will probably know you better than your older professors and she can discuss how well you have performed in her class. Also, she can come in from an different angle: this guy came back to school and has applied himself and succeeded in the classroom. It shows that you are taking furthering your education seriously.

You can explain what you just said "It's been 5 years since I was in school so my professors won't remember me. I know I haven't known you long but the current effort I put into this class is what I plan on doing in graduate school"
