I'm still a little confused. Are they renovating the existing courses to be championship level, or digging new course altogether?

They are combining land from the 3 defunct courses to make one PGA caliber course available to the public

In February 2015, ground was broken on the Rees Jones, Inc. and Torre Design Consortium designed 250-acre plot Championship Course using the footprint of the former East and West Courses.[6] The course is bound by Filmore Ave., Harrison Ave., Marconi Dr. and Wisner Blvd. and Duininck Golf Inc., was awarded the contract to build the $13.2 million course. The par 72 Championship Course will play 7,250 yards in length and will include a new clubhouse for the course

Are they going to renovate the driving range at the North course and use it for both courses or build a new range for the new course? It needs some upgrades regardless

you wanna see some freaks....go ride through Scout Island in City Park......I swear the gutter punks are holding cult sacrifices over there. It's one of the scariest places in the city.

I'm afraid to go running through there and Coutierie Forest. Cars are parked at the entrance all hours of the night and early morning. I suspect there are desperately lonely men meeting each other in the bushes.

Never seen much of the previously mentioned gutter punks, but the queers have been an issue.

Very first time I went out there I parked near there to ride my bike. Had three different guys eye check me.
Then went jogging on the trails once and saw several strange guys walking. Then I read up on the stories about the place, including some bitching in the newspaper about wanting to chase them off.

Those instances were five years ago. Seems to be much better now that the trails is more well known and more of the normal people are using it. I and several friends always take our kids there and see lots of other families.

Okay now your turn to list some negatives.

Most of your pros are based on money. Money makes the world go 'no doubt, so those are valid pros you listed. I concede that.

My biggest negative is the ratio of land that is available for multiple programs vs. a single program. A golf course is a golf course. It can't be anything else.

City Park is about 1300 acres. The current golf course takes up about 300 acres. The "new" course will take up an additional 300 acres. That's nearly half of the park dedicated to a single program. To me that goes against the philosophy of what a large urban park should be about. These types of parks should be for everyone and include a large variety of overlapping programs throughout.

Look at Central Park. Look at Golden Gate Park. Those are what City Park should be striving to be like. How many golf courses do you see in those parks? None. Why? because the land is too valuable to be dedicated to a single program. New Orleans only has so much land. Why dedicate the little bit of open space it has to a single use?

I'm not against golf. I used the crap out of the City Park driving range, and I agree that the north course is super meh. If golf is really needed, then redesign the north course. I'll even cede some land across Filmore for a couple more holes as the north section is pretty cramped.

The area between Filmore and 610 is an amazing piece of land. We used to go walk through there all the time. Scout Island is not full of Gutter Punks. Couturie Forest is not a hobo shanty town. It is land that has tons of potential and can serve multiple uses for all.

So a place where Golf has been played for almost a century now shouldn't have a golf course? I played the Wismer Course in the 90's. It was slammed on the reg.

It absolutely amazes me that there are hipsters out there that oppose turning this run down area (which was always a golf course) into a championship golf course.

I think it should be turned back into an affordable municipal golf course.

There is absolutely zero reason to build a huge championship golf course in New Orleans. Louisiana is a terrible golf state, and not exactly a destination for people looking to play golf.

Just because it was one thing doesn't mean it should always be one thing. Societal values change. City Park straddled the edge of a swamp and suburbs 100 years ago. It made sense to put a golf course there. Now the entire area is developed, and rather densely at that.

I don't know everything about him but City Park is thriving. The new tennis facility is EXTREMELY NICE! It isn't cheap to play and its always packed. The dog park is also really nice and a lot of people use it. Something tells me these hipsters don't want to pay a dime to use any of the facilities. I can definitely see a new nice golf course performing the same way

there is only one way to keep the undesirables out and that is $$$$$$ .... so there will always be opposition to the progress of this city ....

<-- "Hipster" who is a friend of City Park and pays several dimes to use City Park facilities. I've also donated many hours worth of free time for various design services and maintenance days.

Why would you want this when we already have the one crappy City Park Course and the pitch and putt Audubon course? I hope it's a pretty expensive course that attracts real golfers. Would love for it to be semi private. I can't wait to see it restored and everyone should be excited that it's going to be better than ever. Hoorah for progress!
