I understand Lyle.. I head into the plant at 4:00 AM and aint no banks open. Then when I get off at 8:30.. they all closed too. I ain't got no smart phone so I can't deposit my check that way. The plant offers something called direx deposit, but I dont trust that neither. I want my money in hand as fast as I can get it. I love counting that overtime cash. I sure as hell aint throwen it in sum ATM not knowing whats gonna happen and that thing eat it.

You can do night drops at most banks if you need to deposit after hours.

So you work 9 to 9, six or seven days , a week rarely with at least 5 minutes downtime and your main reason for not buying a smartphone is because they cost too much?

Hell, I just did a refi on my mortgage over the internet without going to a bank. Did everything via email and uploading scanned documents to a website. The Notary came to my house for the closing.

If it weren't for businesses needing access to cash, they'd probably shutter a lot of branches now.

I have made hundreds of cash and check deposits at the ATM and never had a single issue. Not one.

I use ATM to take money out but I feel uncomfortable depositing money. I feel like something will go wrong. Guess I'm paranoid but I like handing my deposits to a person who is punching the numbers into the computer

That teller makes mistakes as well, and depending on the kind of bank you're dealing with, they might be printing some paper slips and bringing them back to a machine that scans them to someone in a processing center, who then encodes the information on the tickets and posts them to your account.

So, there's plenty of opportunity there to go wrong.

Probably not. Banks stay in business due to liquidity. The majority of that liquidity is derived from excess cash on deposit. Now, sure, MOST people these days probably get their cash into accounts through direct deposit. But there are still tons of older people that aren't comfortable with technology. Older people tend to have higher balances = branches. Further, you need that branch to bring in new accounts and you run into lots of compliance issues if you start trying to open FDIC-insured deposit accounts online.
