Windows 7 to 8.1.

Installation was successful, but it BSOD's about every 5 minutes.

Doing a clean install like I should have known to do.

Microsoft should stop offering upgrade options and just tell you ahead of time that you have to do a clean install. I have my shite backed up so it isn't a catastrophe, but still

Why are you upgrading to windows 8.1? I'm personally just waiting for windows 10.

8.1 isn't the abomination people make it out to be. 10 is still a way out.

Yeah, I don't get it either. How can numerous Linux distros do continuous rolling upgrades using software from hundreds/thousands of disparate sources, yet Microsoft can't get their shite together and upgrade one version where everything is specifically designed to work together?

Pretty much guarantee you it is driver issues.

Did you happen to go from 32 bit Windows 7 to 64 bit Windows 8.1?

Now I dont disagree that the OP has some sort of driver issue going on.

But saying Linux distros continue to update without problems is just funny. Even Unbuntu runs into a bunch of issues every major release. Wi-FI connectivity issues have plagued them for a long time.

The software wouldn't even allow him to continue with the upgrade if that were the case.

In fact, I'm pretty sure you're only allowed to upgrade Win 7 to Win 8 to Win 8.1 rather than Win 7 directly to Win 8.1. No idea why.

Stopped there...It becomes an install, not an upgrade here...You CANNOT go from 32-62 in an upgrade

Almost every issue with a Linux upgrade is due to a user-modified configuration file, and can likely be solved by deleting or reverting the configuration (if it can be pinpointed), or by the heavy-handed approach of creating a new user account. Have you ever seen a Linux box fail to boot or do the equivalent of a BSOD every few minutes due to a software issue?

More than likely, not worth troubleshooting, just did a clean install.

Why would you want to upgrade that way? Way easier to just wipe/reload from scratch.

Easier how? If the upgrade procedure worked as advertised, you would just upgrade, and that's it.

From scratch, you need to back up your data, do a fresh install, restore your data, reinstall your programs.

I'll agree that the end product is cleaner with a fresh install, but I think that's because MS sucks.

Easier? No, I have no idea why you would even say that.

I'm counting on a smooth upgrade path from Win 7 to Win 10.

Back when I was building PCs I learned pretty quickly that upgrading was never the way to go using Microsoft.

98 upgrade to Me, locked up, wipe, clean install of Me, wiped, clean re-install of 98.
98 upgrade to XP, locked up, wipe, clean install of XP. (Lesson learned)
XP, wiped, clean install of Vista, wiped, clean re-install of XP.

I quit building gaming PCs around 2006 or 2007 so now I just buy dell's and HP's for the office.
