Rent the car, man. The whole week. San Juan is cool, we stayed in Rincon for a few days, which is a more laid back surf spot. Fajardo looked really nice from the island hopper to Vieques, which is excellent.

Went last year and had a really good time. Definitely rent a car if you want to sight see. We rented ours from Charlie's for 10 days and got a really good deal. Beat everyone elses prices down there. We stayed in Rincon for 5 nights and enjoyed that the best. Stayed in Luquillo for the other 5. Didn't find that area near as nice. Went to the rainforest one day and hiked to the very top but saw nothing. We were socked in clouds and rain after we got 3/4 the way up. Was still pretty cool. Food was hit or miss. Some places were really good others not so much. Next time we go we are going to stay out on Culebra or Vieques.

that's a nice hotel, I've stayed there for work maybe a hundred times over the years, good launching point for getting out, the Condado Plaza is a few hundred yards away and has a decent casino(Hilton has one too) just about every type of restaurant is available on that street, plus you're not too far from old San Juan which has some excellent hole in the wall restaurants and some neat historic things, believe it or not, the bus system from there is the best way to go, dirt cheap, safe, you could look into a day trip to the rain forest, be careful, it's slippery, have fun
ETA: there's a mexican restaurant, believe it or not, right around the bay from the Hilton towards the Condado Plaza that is worth checking out, it has a blue awning and that's what we always called it, great food, Cuban and PR seafood too, excellent

if I want to do the rainforest tours, I'd need some way to get there.
I'm not saying don't rent a car. Just be ready for some shite arse driving. It's really not that bad if you normally drive in BR. The carribe shuttle will take you to old san juan and other places around the hotel, but you will have to rent a car to get to the rain forest and that end of the island.
