Recap: LSU 84, Auburn 61

LSU has had trouble against the lower end of the SEC this season, plagued with a lack of effort defensively and in rebounding. However, this time around, Auburn got LSU's full attention. LSU made 69.8% of their two point shots (30/43) and 33.3% of their three point shots (7/21) to cruise to an 84 to 61 victory.
LSU was lead by Jarell Martin who had another double-double. This time with 25 points on 11 of 17 shooting and 12 rebounds. LSU also got significant contributions from Jalyn Patterson (16 points 7:1 Ast:TO -- both career highs), Jordan Mickey (14 points, 4 rebounds, 3 blocks), and Keith Hornsby (13 points, 4 rebounds). Josh Gray came off the bench for 18 minutes with a very efficient 6 points , 3 rebounds, and a 6:1 Ast:TO.
Defensively, LSU held in check the three headed monster that really hurt the Tigers the first go-around. KT Harrell, Antoine Mason, and Cinmeon Bowers scored a combined 68 points for Auburn in game 1. LSU greatly improved their defense on the three, giving them only 36 points this time.
The 84 points LSU scored were their most in an SEC non-OT game since a 92-81 win over Mississippi State last season. They scored 1.25 points per possession in a relatively slow paced LSU game as the Tigers began milking the clock pretty heavy in the second half.
Where does that put LSU:
The win has seemed to please some of the rankings. LSU's ESPN RPI moved up to 50th (from 53) after the win. Their BPI moved from 38th to 35th. The Tigers KenPom ranking moved into the 20's for the first time this season jumping from 32 to 29 after the 23 point win. CBS's RPI still has LSU ranked 52nd.
The Tigers are just 1 game behind Texas A&M for 4th place and the 3rd place Ole Miss team plays Georgia today and LSU on Saturday. LSU could surpass the Rebels if Ole Miss goes 0-2 on the week.
Johnny Jones has become the first LSU coach in history to have two 20 win seasons in his first three years. It took Dale Brown 8 years to win 20 games twice, Harry Rabenhorst 9 years, and John Brady 6 years to accomplish that feat (no other LSU coach has had two 20 win seasons). LSU is currently listed in 88 of 93 brackets (followed by bracketmatrix.com) and are putting themselves in great shape to move into the field with just a few more wins.
Let's not make the mistake in saying that LSU had a good win last night, Auburn is not a very good team, however, the Tiger's won in a fashion that both gives them confidence and the selection committee confidence that LSU has turned the corner.

If we continue to rebound the ball like last night and limit opponents offensive rebounds I like our chances the rest of the way. Auburn played mostly man all night, thought they might have played more zone last night. If we stay out of foul trouble Saturday which I think has been one of the main differences lately we have a 3 game win streak.

Big step in the right direction, dominating an opponent on the road that beat us at home before. Win our next two at home (Ole Miss and Tennessee) and I really like our tournament chances.

I think this was a huge game for our chances. Still can't sit down and coast to the finish line. Life on the bubble is stressful, but it also can bring the best out of a team. How would you feel if you had a great year, finished a 6 seed then got paired up with LSU in the tournament.
Team has to stay hungry and continue to work on the defensive end. Good things will happen.
We took too many three's last night, but luckily the guys taking most of them were the right people. Patterson and Hornsby should be the only two taking three's unless the shot is so open that you can't pass it up.

One key thing that stuck out to me was in the first half, we were up 14-0 in the paint pretty early. We were only up by 2-4 points, but Auburn was shooting well and it was a great sign of things to come in the second half.

I posted this in the Gray thread but I find it relevant to share here considering the team seems to have turned the corner with the personnel changes to the starting line up

The dude has literally only taken a little over 1 three pointer a game since the Miss St. game. I am ok with 1 three a game from my PG.
And he also only has 12 Ft's attempted since then as well, 10 of them coming in the Auburn game in BR.
Also he is only averaging 4.5 FGA's per game since Auburn.
And once again since Auburn, which I believe is when Patterson took over Gray has averaged a 3-1 A-TO ration.
So who is complaining about Gray's play?

Thought they would cool down in the first one, but they decided to hit 9 of 20 from three...
But I agreed. We looked really good using pick and roll early in the game, and we were able to get out in transition a ton.

Looking likely that we will be the 5 seed unless Ole Miss or A&M fall apart down the stretch. That means it would be important that we win our first round SEC Tourny game otherwise it would be another bad loss.

The difference between pick, roll and shoot 3's versus feeding the big men.

I wouldn't count us out yet. I could easily see Georgia beat Ole Miss tonight. If that happens, LSU could hold tie breaker for 4th by the weekend. Then Ole Miss has to go on the road to Alabama (tough place to play) and has a pesky Vandy team. I'd rather be in Ole Miss' position than ours, but I wouldn't be shocked if we magically got to 4. Especially if we can beat Arkansas.

Last night was a very good "non loss", and a nice game for the eye test. Not to discount the win, but LSU did what tournament teams are supposed to do, pound bad teams.
In the first game against AU I didn't think they defended Mason/Harrell all that bad. Those guys just hit tough jumper after tough jumper. Last night you could tell that it was a huge emphasis to get out and guard those guys even better. It showed, as neither were very effective.
LSU will have to do the same against Ole Miss's guards. They were able to do that in Oxford and it was the difference in the game.
A few things I noticed last night:
Great to see LSU slow things down late in the 2nd half with a big lead. If you're up 15+ points in the final 5 minutes, burning 35 seconds off the game clock each possession is probably more important that an extra 2 points here or there during that time frame. Hell, even a shot clock violation isn't THAT bad given the situation
I keep hearing people say that teams like to push the pace are a bad match-up for LSU and I think to myself "what games are these morons watching?" Any time AU even thought about seriously pressing, LSU just flew down court for an easy basket. The current starting 5 can all run the floor with ease. I wouldn't entice them to do so if I was an opposing coach.
FT's were ugly last night. They didn't just miss them, but missed them badly.
This team still seems to have a tendency to relax and almost "goof off" after getting a nice lead. You wish they would have more of a killer instinct and step on the opponents throat after getting a big lead instead of making sloppy passes/decisions

Nice! Although I would like to avoid an Izzo coached team in March

Couldn't agree more. Teams that want to slow the game down and make us execute in the half court are a bad matchup for us.

win 2 of the last 3 and they are in regardless of SEC Tourney performance, IMO

Only loss they could sustain would be at Arky

If Ole Miss takes down Georgia tonight that could be a massive RPI game Saturday.

You're wrong. Just win 2 of the next 3
