LONDON (AP) — Britain has become the first country in the world to allow the creation of human embryos from the DNA of three people, a technique intended to help mothers avoid passing on genetically degenerative diseases to their babies.
The bill granting the controversial techniques was passed Tuesday by the House of Lords, after being approved earlier this month by the House of Commons.
The methods involve altering an egg or embryo before it is transferred into a woman which had previously been forbidden by British law. They are intended to avoid passing on defects in the mother's mitochondria, which can result in diseases including muscular dystrophy, heart, kidney, liver failure and severe muscle weakness.

Eugenics
Soon enough all babies will be required to be conceived in an office or lab (and I don't mean with the secretary)

Commercialized genetic filtering, available only to the wealthy, genetic superiority, the rich stay rich. So, business as usual.

An eventual classification system of humans ranked from Alphas to Epsilons. Does anyone have any soma?
Seriously, the changes to the human race that we are going to witness in our lifetimes are going to be astronomical.

I agree that humans have reached the point where they can drive their own evolution. Im not sure those changes will be noticeable within on persons lifetime.

I think it transcends this topic though. Recent discussion about the coming singularity, etc. I'm pretty terrified about what's coming next.

Terrified? Not Intrigued? Cautious even? Youre terrified?
Posted on 2/25/15 at 12:17 am to Hester Carries
I'd say so, since I enjoy our current way of life. The premise that the species of which I am a part is about to undergo radical changes with respect to both technology and our own physiology is a pretty terrifying one. Not very chill if you ask me.

While we are obviously progressing as a human race in that direction, we won't ever achieve that in time IMO.
Also, kind of ironic in a sense that a philosophy like that would have imply a morally objective basis:
Right when we cease to be human. Sounds like a Huxleyan nightmare to me.
