Liked them both, but as far as watching one again soon, I'd choose Whiplash. Partly, and ironically because the drums wore me out with Birdman after a while.

Clearly the movie went over your head if that's all you got from it.
It illustrates the point that greatness is not achieved unless people are pushed beyond what they think they can do.
I interpreted it as an exposing of a glaring problem in today's younger generation of accepting mediocrity and the inability of educators to push them farther because of parents' adverse involvement.

Birdman had some damned good acting and actors. Storyline? a Black Swan variant....

His last protege committed suicide, which he blamed on a car wreck. His current protege was physically and mentally tormented to the point where he himself was involved in what really could have been a fatal car wreck trying to prove himself worthy. When JK is dismissed from the school and encounters Miles, does he apologize? No, he instead lures him in and offers him a gig with the intention of humiliating his former protege and ruin his future career potential.
JK wasn't a mentor, he was a psychopath.

Whiplash for me was good but that's mainly because of the soundtrack.. I just cringed at times because of the storyline but felt the acting was great..
I enjoyed birdman more but felt they fricked up the ending.

I'm surprised that didn't come up more. That's the first thing Mrs. Baloo mentioned, and I noticed it, too. It's quite similar to Black Swan, only a little bit more on the nose. I liked it, but Black Swan was the greater movie, IMNSHO.
I just watched both movies this weekend and I gotta say, they are both fairly similar. Birdman is a lot showier and it has some pretty fantastic camera work. Whiplash is a little bit more straight ahead, visually speaking, but it makes its points on the decline of culture a lot more effectively.
Birdman is just so on the nose in its contempt for comic book movies. And I get that, but some of the greatest directors ever also made genre films. Just because a movie is a comic book film doesn't mean it can't be great. Honestly, the character who made the best point was his daughter, who pointed out the only people impressed by the theater would be 800 or so rich, white people. That point is never really rebutted, and the movie is ambivalent towards the theater, both admiring it and sneering at it.
Whiplash, OTOH, instead of talking about why pop music is bad, it shows why jazz music is great. The decline of jazz is mentioned, but it's not really hammered home. But the message is clear: this is a lot harder, and because it's harder, it's inaccessible to people. That's what makes this worthwhile (and I say this as someone who doesn't really like jazz). It made the point that things that aren't as popular or as accessible can still be better. As he says, this is not subjective.
