I have a Remington 700 in .280 and a Remington 710 in 30-06?

Now I know there are tons of modifications that can be done to a 700 but im speaking more in caliber. Which would be better to set up for long range ( 300-400) yards

What are you trying to hit at that range

White tails or pigs. Mainly pigs as I doubt I'd ever take a shot at a whitetail over 300 yards

Do you reload?

Either will do 300-400 with ease. If you are going to modify it in any way, just got with the 280 700.

I prefer my 30-06 but that's just me cause I've been hunting with one forever.

I have a WSM .270 that I also like but the ammo $$$$$ is insane.

I don't reload and not looking to spend money on modifications. Just curious on what caliber and bullet would be the best to start at.

I currently shoot core lokt in 150g for the .280 and 180g for 06

Not as familiar first hand with the .280, but the 06 will do a 400 yard shot all day long. The .280 is an excellent choice but due to lack of first hand knowledge I would go with the 06.

Either one, practice with both.

Id flip a coin.

7mm vs 30cal, same case, different bullets. Without looking Id bet the 280 has less drop at those ranges but it would be minimal at most.

Being that the 280 is a 700 vs a 710 I would imagine its more accurate also. I'd go with the 280.

I'd like the .30-06 but not in a remington 710. For practical use I don't think anybody would ever notice the difference. Stuff will die equally dead at equal range with both of them and a competent user.

If we were taking a purpose built rifle the 06 wins handily IMO because it can launch heavier bullets.

According to that link, the bullets really start falling after 300 yards. Thanks for the link btw. Looks to be really useful

What optics do each of these have. Also invest in a good rangefinder. Practice with a few different bullets if possible.

Half a dozen vs six. It's a matter of which rifle/scope is up to the challenge. Considering the 700 is equivalent to the hand of a vengeful god and the 710 is basically a tomato stake, I'd go with the 280.

There is no better set up for that range. That is not long range IMO. Both would be fine.
