For those thinking about suicide

I know we've had posters before who have said things about being hopeless and down in the dumps. I've actually been there myself and had thoughts like that. You really don't realize how many people really do care about you, and with help you can get through all this.
A friend of mine committed suicide this weekend. He was just a casual friend of mine, more like a friend of a friend. He was roommates with my best friend. I wasn't very close with him, but I was deeply upset with it all. He was a great guy, fun guy to be around. I never saw any signs of stuff like this and I don't think many people did. Had he reached out more to anyone, who knows what could've happened. I would've been more than happy to be there for him, as I know many more would as well.
Everyone always says stuff like that but this really hit home with me. If it shook me up so much, I know how badly it did do the same for others. The man was a poster on this site and I don't know his username, doesn't matter, but RIP friend. I will miss you, and many others will.
If anyone is goin through anything at all, I would be happy to chat in private. I know some people feel like they can't share stuff with anyone so maybe a random stranger could help. Who knows. I'd really like to help with suicide prevention. It's a shame to see such hopeful lives with potential ended like this.
As an aside- does anyone know of any charitable organizations in which you can get involved to try to help with stuff like this?

As a retired police officer I have spoken to a lot of people contemplating suicide and I have talked them out of it. I have also been on a ton of suicide calls and it is always a tough call to go on. It is a act that scars your family forever.
Like Tigerfan56 said please talk to someone. You have someone that cares for you.

I'll be honest.... i've been there. I understand the feeling of life crushing you and wanting to end it. At that point it is hard to see anything from an outside perspective and think anyone would understand. What woke me up is when I got sober and realized how much I had affected others around me and that in the throws of addiction I wasn't just hurting myself. It put the suicide thing into perspective and helped me realize how you aren't ever completely alone in your actions.
Saying all that, I don't feel suicide is completely selfish like some put it. Until you are in a spot and feeling the pressure so tough that you are contemplating suicide. On occasions I think it's also selfish from the other perspective when people don't want you to take your life and you continue to suffer just for their own selfish reasons of going on without you.

How sad. I didn't know that about the poli board poster.
I have seen some ugly stuff in this life. The few I knew well that killed themselves shocked everyone. One was a gun shot to her head and I saw her the week before. I still wonder if there was foul play. The other was a bubble head on a sub for no reason whatsoever that anyone knew; took his own life with a gun and a pillow in his bunk, on shore duty. Addiction can cause so many brutal and sad things. As well as depression.

What about volunteering for a suicide hotline? God knows I couldn't do that, but there have been difficult times where I desperately needed to talk to someone. I was fortunate to have caring family members, some aren't as lucky.

How does one get into that sort of thing?

bullshite. It is 100% selfish and weak.
And you think it's selfish of your loved ones for them to not want you to kill yourself? Wow

You sound like you've never been in that dark place. From a very simplistic view it is selfish. But it's easy to say when your mind is right. It's not so easy to see the damage that you'll do by committing suicide when you're depressed and see no way out.
And it's definitely not weak. Mental illness is something that can and will crush the strongest of people. To beat it, I'd argue it takes a lot more than strength. It takes personal awareness and recognizing that you need to seek help because it's almost impossible to beat on your own.

My father commit suicide March 11, 2001. Still bothers me. I was sad then angry. Regretful then remorseful. Sad then angry again.
I think about suicide all the time. I do not think about killing myself at all, I just think about the act. It tears families apart.

I tend to agree, but on the flip side I've never been very miserable.
Much less miserable enough to die.
