I'm about to turn my shed into a mancave. Already have my Olhausen table in there, but I have lots of cleaning to do before I can use it regularly. Luckily I have a place 5 minutes from my house that has good (enough anyway) tables and is usually $5 an hour or less, so I don;t have to waste too much money on pool at the moment.
But once I finish with my shed, I may never go inside the main house again

I think I'm confused a little over the layout.
We had a pool table growing up also. It was in a separate room, though. My parents did that on purpose, so they could close the doors and not hear us all night. We had our privacy and they had theirs. Main thing was our house was the place to go and they did it, so they'd know we would be home at night and they could get some sleep not having to worry about us running the roads.

i know..its confusing. i need to get in and take better photos. i'm digging up what was on the TN real estate site when we bought and they're shitty photos.
essentially the house is a long rectangle. all the bedrooms are on one end (essentially), entry is in the middle, and kitchen/den and the big open area is on the OPPOSITE end.
sunroom is in the back (rear of the pool table room photo) and there's a big-arse hill that goes straight up..so we don't really have much of a backyard even though we're on 2 acres as most of that acerage is the hill behind us.
the outside pool area is on the side of the house.
so, to summarize..all bedrooms on one end, big room and pool on the other end.
kitchen is in the middle more or less.

So, can both the pool room and den be seen from the kitchen? That's what I was trying to figure out.

one of my favorite memories from being at LSU in the 1980s was buying my dad a huebler custom pool cue (i was making big money working a minimum wage job while at lsu) that when you joined to 2 halves together made a completely invisible seam. it was so sweet. my dad has loved that ever since.
i wish i could find a photo of it but google is only turning up cues that have a band where they screw together

Yes take it out if its not being used. This alone will date the house.

I would put a stone subway tile backsplash in.
FWIW, I think the glass tile backsplashes that seem to be all the rage these days will date your kitchen in 5-6 years...

Finished the kitchen! 
Well..in MSPAINT anyway. What do you think? shelves, subway tiles and i'm trying to decide between a 'chimney' or 'non chimney' hood.
kitchen will be white and cabinets are likely going to be white as well.

bump for the 1 person still interested in this thread (ok zero people)
appliances have come in and i've managed to cut the corian where the range is going. no gas line yet and i've got alot of work ahead of me to install the venting for the hood, install a couple of outlets (since both stove & hood use a 3 prong connection) but you can get a rough idea.
i'm very happy with the range so far. inexpensive and extremely heavy/solid.
that black thing on the island is the old amana cooktop. anyone want a vintage electric cooktop?
also..yeah or nay on the soffit??? at this point i'm thinking of just demolishing it and having that area open to the ceiling.
the only thing keeping me from doing that is the thought that if i left it i could install some downlighting for the shelves i'm installing.

Get rid of the soffit/furrdown.
Ditch the stainless backsplash over stove. Use the same tile as the rest of the backsplash, and run it all the way up to the bottom of the upper cabinets.
I like white subway; it is classic (though currently popular). Look at matte rather than gloss for a more subtle sheen; or look at glass subway tiles for a slightly modernist appeal. Forget tumbled edge tiles, too hard to scrub kitchen crud out of the irregular dents in the tumbled tile.

an interesting one
its a 'hallman', custom made by the guys at austex appliances. they carry the infamous NXR (also available at COSTCO) but the story (according to saleswoman) is that there were a few issues people report with the NXR (knobs getting too hot, the way the stove door opens, the grates on top, etc.) so the owner of austex (last name is hallman go figure) contacted the same plant in california who is turning out the NXR stoves.
basically he signed an agreement with them to use the same manufacturing assembly line, but to put his modified touches on it; notably this one doesnt have 4 15k btu burners but 2 15k and 2 smaller btu burners, a different back, etc.
in other words, its basically the same unit as the NXR for sale at AJMADISON and COSTCO with a few changes.
i rolled the dice since it was $1600 INCLUDING the LP kit pre-installed. i was looking at 2100 at AJ or 2K at COSTCO (plus tax plus purchasing the LP kit separately & having to install it)
so there you go. its not even listed on the AUSTEX website yet, its pretty new so you have to call them to get the details.
eta look at the photos above. the MS paint one is showing the NXR (since i didnt have a pic of the HALLMAN) and the bottom is obviously the actual HALLMAN.
one nice touch..the logo was included in the box..not on the range so i can just leave it without a logo/brand at all on it.

pretty much sold on the white subway tile and possibly gray grout to make it stand out. not sure about matte vs glass or gloss.
i guess i should buy a few tiles & play with them

Boy, do I disagree w/that one. I have white, matte subway all over the place, and SS appliances. The stainless steel hood exterior is a bitch; it shows every little streak and wipe mark, visible from the next room as if highlighted. The matte subway can be scrubbed w/a magic eraser, some BKF (barkeeper's friend) or vinegar, and it looks great without polishing. Hood, dishwasher, fridge, stove, ie, anything stainless, requires actual polishing after it is cleaned.
