James Franco was worse.
Its close, him and Hathaway were terrible.

I think NPH just had some shitty writing sent his way.
Apparently the head writer this year isn't even a comedy writer. I think NPH gamely tried to dress up some terrible material. He was fine. Not that funny, but he had a good opening number and he didn't contribute to the show's pacing problems. He kept things moving, his #1 job.
His biggest virtue was being genuine and self-effacing. The room never turned on him.

Ricky Gervais for 2016 Oscars!

I don't think he did a good job as host, but I really do have to agree with earlier posters regarding the writing for the show. It was HORRIBLE.
Here's a thought that I have about the hosting gig:
I think too much is expected from the Oscar host these days: everyone now expects a big song and dance number, killer monologue, Hollywood-insider level winks-and-nods that always score, and the room to fall in love with him or her.
If I were an actor or comedian, I would never take that job.

I didn't watch it nor have I read anythign about it...what was so bad?
I've seen NPH host some award shows before and he did great. Were the jokes flat or what? And what's the story on the suitcase?

Exactly. He was fine.
Also, I think it's funny that the "takes a lot of balls to wear that dress" is getting so much heat.

My God you always have the best sig. and avi.

I don't blame NPH that the Oscars are 2/3's filler.

Yeah, it was the jokes that were shite, and NPH did his best from what he was given.
Yeah, I'd probably want to do the Globes because you can be funnier and use more venom, and if you bomb, no one is going to remember as much. They really should have let Kimmel do it this year, but he would have for sure turned it into a semi-Roast and go after everyone, so they decided to play it safe with NPH.

I thought he did a fine job. He was a lot better than some of the recent hosts (James Franco, Seth McFarlane)
It's just such a tough gig. You've got to appeal to the masses and do some Hollywood insider humor. You can't be too nice or too mean. You're the captain of a show that runs 3 1/2 to 4 hours. Most of the audience is a nervous wreck because they're nominated for Oscars, so it's tough to get laughs.
Chris Rock and David Letterman are two of the funniest people on earth and they were mediocre Oscar hosts.
