2016 Jeep Wrangler getting a diesel power-train option

2016 Wrangler Diesel
Will this be worth the premium in price(up to $7K)? I have long craved a diesel wrangler and may bite the bullet next year. Also does anyone have any feedback on the current Eco-diesels that Chrysler is putting out?
Caveat: If I bought it, I would plan to keep it for an extended period of time(>10 yrs).

They are Fiat sourced VM Motori diesels, solid engines though they are lighter duty, high featured units than something typically seen in trucks. I'd expect them to be smooth, fairly quiet, and probably very well suited to the terrain difficulties of suburban mall parking lots that they typically see.

Personally I would not buy the first run of any new model like that. let em work the bugs out. It's a jeep there will be bugs.

Unless you're getting 50% better mileage when buying a diesel, it isn't worth it. Fuel and running costs are always more expensive. Absolutely, positively not worth an extra $7k

I think they waited too long
until they go to an aluminum frame and lighter axles the 3L diesel isn't going to help mileage enough to offset the up charge
of course, then it won't be a wrangler any more...
my wife has had 2 4door wranglers, an 07 with the smaller gas engine and a 12 with the pentastar. The 12 is much more fun to drive but the fuel consumption is a drag. A smaller diesel would be just fine for trail use but probably not as a daily driver

This motor will be a disaster for folks that want to tune, add big tires and go off road. The average person who hears diesel and thinks power and durability is going to be shocked.
On the other hand it will be a beast in the line at day care and elementary school pick ups. It should also be able to navigate Starbucks parking lots with unparalleled aplomb.

IIRC, upgrading from gas to diesel in 3/4 and 1 ton trucks is cheaper than $7k in most cases, and those are ridiculously different engines. It's just a new fad that people are buying into. There are only a few vehicles on the market that are worth upgrading to a diesel, and a jeep wrangler is not one of them
Not sure if it is a turbo engine or not, but people are retarded if they think a turbodiesel is good off-road. I guess they'll find out soon enough though

A friend has a Cherokee with a diesel in it, they are the regular Mercedes small vehicle diesels and are very quiet and reliable.
He works for Chrysler in Canada so he got a good discount on it.
He also had a lot of good things to say about the diesel.

Turbo diesels are the very best off road engines.(Think almost all off-road heavy equipment, tractors, dozers etc)
The computer controlled fly-by-wire turbo diesels that have passed our latest clean air standards and fuel mileage requirements for on the road vehicles are horrible off-road engines though. However people thinking they are smarter than the engineers who designed the engines adding tuners for power will be the biggest problem.

My wife drives a TDI and loves it, great mileage and very reliable. I drive an f250 diesel again very reliable and efficient.
Neither one has a tuner or larger tires. Neither gets hammered on at high RPM, both are driven as a compression fired engine should be. I don't think this would be the norm for a diesel powered jeep. JMHO

It pisses me off having to wait that second for the turbo/turbos to spool up while I'm sliding into a ditch. Then, you make 95% power instantaneously, and you go flying into the other side ditch. I have done the same crawling up rocky hills. There is a higher level of control in a NA gas engine. Being able to blip the throttle is everything off-road, and you can't do that with a turbodiesel

For your mudriding-rockthrashing hobbies turbo-diesels should never even be considered. They don't suck, they just are not the correct tools for the job. Anybody that thinks adding a tuner and large tires makes a diesel a play buggy is a fool and probably regularly curses vice grips for their inefficiency of use as a hammer.
