bought a new house and the clover ran wild this winter, what can I put in the lawn this spring?

Atrazine pre emerge in Novemeber and February will keep it from coming up at all, and will kill it after its up a little.
Spray with 2,4 D in the spring when its up. It will kill whats up.
ETA: what kinds of grass?

Clover fixes nitrogen in your soil and is very beneficial, but kill away!

It will also take over your lawn. You can put granulated nitrogen down for next to nothing if you are deficient.

2,4 D is the answer.
metsulfuron also will work, more expensive, but will give some residual.

2,4 D by itself doesn't control clovers. 2,4 D + Dicamba will do well though.
Three pretty good tables on herbicide selection and if they are going to hurt your grass.

Giving your grass some nitrogen will decrease clover as well, since it grows well in low nitrogen environments.

When is the best time to do soil testing for your lawn?

2,4 D + Atrazine fried all the clover in my yard. Just sprayed 2 weeks ago.
Spraying atrazine in November and February is the way to go, IMO. It will last about the whole summer

now, last week, anytime is fine really. You can do as many in a year as you want to be updated on the quality and needs of your soil

Sounds like the atrazine did the killing of the clover. But 2,4 D will take out a lot of other stuff that was probably around.

Atrazine will definitely kill it. There are many different types of clover. 2,4 D Amine will kill my clover I have in SC. You are right tho, it is not 100%. It also will fry dandelions. Red Clover is the one that 2,4 D amine is the least likely to kill.
2,4 DB will not kill clover.
Dicamba will fry the shite out of it.
