How Scary are Blood Clots?

Chris Bosh's news kinda has me freaked out. I thought these were things only mega fat, lazy people got. Didn't know elite, fit athletes could get them.
Can't imagine one of these sneaking up on you and then 9 times out of 10 you're dead before you even know what's going on.

I'm in healthcare . We see it mostly in sedentary workers who sit in front of computers all day .

My cousin died from a PE in his early 30's. Had a great career, family that loved him. He was in normal good health for someone his age. Got up from his couch one day, and was likely dead before he hit the floor.

About 20 years ago I had to have back surgery, week later blood clot formed in my left leg and swelled up. Was rushed to hospital and was admitted and had to stay in it for 12 days, not able to leave the bed. I threw one to my lung as well. Back then I had no clue how close I was to dying. Worst part was when they tried to do a test by running some dye in my leg for xray, but leg was so swollen they had to put the IV in through the bottom of my foot....they tried 5 times and never could get it. That was some Pain!

Had an employee drop dead last year because of one.......came in my office with unusual swelling in neck and I ushered him ASAFP to the ER. 4 days in ICU then began fricking off by drinking on Cumadin (sp) and continued to smoke.
When he didn't show up to work, I went by his corp apartment and found him. Sad.

It's hard for me to describe how much of a (hopefully) irrational fear I have of something like this happens. I think about it all the time.

I had one (in my brain) in college that caused nerve damaged and i'm totally deaf in one ear because of it. Kept me in the hospital for three days and my family was freaking out.

I got a blood clot on a road trip one day while storm chasing. I'm in good shape, skinny and run 4-5 days a week. I'm tall though, so that's a contributing factor. I noticed my foot turning red and swelling the first day, about 7 hours into the trip. The next day it got worse, and it hurt to walk. The day after that, I couldn't even bend my toes and it really hurt to walk. I had no idea what it was, I thought it may be a bite that got infected, but there was no evidence of that on my skin. It all seemed internal, but we decided to find the nearest hospital the next morning. (Middle of no where Kansas)
By a stroke of luck I guess, my longboard (skateboard) which was leaning against the truck, fell and landed right on my foot. It hurt like hell but the next morning my foot looked and felt completely normal. After talking to nurses after the trip, that's when I realized it had to be a blood clot. Definitely not waiting if this happens again!

not sure what everyone is afraid of here. If i could choose a way to go this seems about as good as any. Something that happens so fast your gone before you realize it. We all are going to die, some in worse ways than others... this one seems like a pretty decent way to go

Was playing golf one day in high school, looked down and my left arm was blue. Thought it was weird so went to my doctor. He said there was nothing wrong and it was probably my bag cutting off circulation. The next day, it started to throb when I was running. So I knew something was up. Went to the ER and It was a blood clot in my shoulder. Had to spend a week in the hospital. They said if it ever happened again, I'd have to lose a rib.
Several years later, I was at an Alabama game and my arm was light red. No, it wasn't my inner-Gump...it was another blood clot. Went to my doctor again (different one than the one in high school) and told him it felt like a blood clot. He dismissed it but said he'd give me a sonogram just so I could feel better. Well, there it was in my other shoulder. Had to spend another week plus in the hospital and get both top ribs removed.
It's scary stuff and now I have to take an aspirin a day for the rest of my life. Still wish I had requested to keep the ribs.

Except not everyone just drops dead. My brother was about 40 when he had a PE. He said it hurt like a bitch. Spent 11 days in ICU and another 8 in the hospital. It fricked him up. He's had a series of health problems in the ~10 years since then.

Well with PEs, you basically suffocate to death so it's not all that cool of a way to die.
