re: Do you really NEED a microwave?Posted by TigernMS12 on 2/20/15 at 2:15 pm to LSUsmartass
I use it for popcorn only. I prefer to reheat things either in an oven or stove top. My wife uses one for quick lunches and stuff at her work though all the time.

Popcorn on the stove is much better and much cheaper. We can buy a huge jar of kernels and it lasts way longer than the 12 pack of microwavable pouches. A little bit of oil and a few minutes and you have a ton of popcorn. When we kick back and actually watch a movie as a family I always make a huge bowl of popcorn. I'd have to heat 3 separate pouches to get the same amount, and in less time I can have it all popped on the stove.

Having thought of the many things for which I use the microwave, I've decided it's more than convenient. It's a luxury.
I don't know about calling it a luxury... at least not in America where every shady motel room has one. And it's definitely not a necessity... so that makes it a convenience.

Yes we need a microwave. It's built into the brick wall and would leave a funny looking hole without it. Also the timer is a useful feature.

Not to cook, just to reheat
This. Today I used the microwave twice. Once to reheat some pasta and once for some onion/bean soup.
The microwave was on for a total of 1 minute combined. I'd use much more electricity using the stove for reheating.

Definitely a luxury.
I will second the making popcorn stove top. Just a better product, especially if you buy high quality kernels. I also like to make a variety of flavors. Curry popcorn, 5-spice popcorn, crawfish boil popcorn.

I use it for microwave popcorn, but my wife got a popcorn cooker recently and we made a batch that turned out awesome, so that use might be obsolete.
Very nice. I've been cooking batches on the stovetop in a big pot. Honey butter popcorn is the jammmmm.

DO I need one? No. Do I like having one? Yes. Sure makes defrosting frozen leftovers a lot easier.

Microwaves are much more energy efficient for heating smaller servings than stoves are. If you cook enough to make leftovers, and if you have multiple people in your home who are eating at different times, it adds up quickly.
You don't need a microwave, but you also don't need an air conditioner, a car, insulation, a water heater, etc.

I consider it a kitchen necessity. Reheating, steaming vegetables, melting chocolate, softening butter or cream cheese for use in baking, baking potaotes, heating a single cup of water for tea......but not for popcorn. I make that on the stovetop. Better tasting, less packaging, and bigger kernels.

Buddy - a large part of the world doesn't even use a stove.
Do you really NEED a microwave?
No
In fact, you don't really need a stove.

Reheating rice would be the biggest hassle of not having a microwave.
Either put it in a ziploc bag and run some hot water over the bag or put it in a colander and run some hot water over it. Thats how we do it at the hunting camp.

frickin right i need a microwave. If my microwave went out I would go by one the next hour. Microwaves are awesome.
quote:This is exactly why I use my microwave so much. It is a pain in the arse to heat up on the stove then dirty a bunch of pots. I also eat leftovers fairly often
The convenience comes in with not having nearly as many pain in the arse dirty dishes. Let's say you dont have a microwave and have a container of gumbo leftover that you want to stretch out a few days. You have to dirty another small pot or sauce pan every time you want to heat some up instead of just the one bowl you will be eating out of. What would you rather do, use the microwave and dirty a few bowls or have to clean pots every night?
