An earlier thread led me to believe that this site may not be teeming with Biblical scholars... but has the recent insurgence of persecution of Christians and Jews led any of you to wonder if the end of the world may be close at hand??

PS: your beliefs don't have to be Biblically based; Nostradamus, Mayan calendar, any Eschatological (big word that I learned only last week : means study of the end of times... Your welcome) philosophy will do

Inb4 whack

If you're mostly referring to ISIS, they seem to be doing a good job persecuting fellow Muslims as well. Batshit crazy people doing batshit crazy things. Unless you're a bible thumper, it's just a bunch of third world savages doing the kind of thing third world savages have always done, we just have 24/7 news to cover it these days.

Please fill me in on this persecution. People love to feel persecuted.

People have been talking about the Christian Apocalypse since 40 AD by citing current world events.

I did a Bible study on Revelations a couple of years ago. Whether you are a Christian or not, it has to be one of the most outstanding examples of symbolic literature ever written. The four horsemen are brilliant!! Well, I am a Christian so I believe it. One constant throughout the Bible is that God does what he says he is going to do.
At the time I was studying Revelation, I didn't worry much about the end being at hand - the humanity survived the Holocaust, sooo we're good, right??
One thing that stood out in Revelation, was the prophecy that when God decided that enough martyrs had died, he would send Jesus back and put an end to it all - goats to the left, sheep to the right...
Until recently slaughtering Christians for religions sake was on the wane. In three days, ISIS added 29 more martyrs in Egypt. Basically my question is... When does God have enough martyrs???

I'm atheist, so I don't believe those fairy tales. But, can I suggest you take the bible for its good points and discard the rest?
if not, you must think:
slavery is ok
people who work on sunday should be killed
eating shellfish is a sin

There is no such prophecy in the book of Revelation (Notice there is no "s"). You are probably talking about the 144,000 Jews. So incredible disheartening that no people have a clue about that or any of Revelation.

What should have caught your attention is that 1/4 of all mankind is going to die in the first 3.5 years of the Tribulation.

What should catch your attention about martyrs is that God loves to see his children martyred. That's rough, but it is true. So much in your short passage is wrong, and you hardly said anything.

9 When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained. 10 They called out in a loud voice, “How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?” 11 Then each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to wait a little longer, until the full number of their fellow servants, their brothers and sisters,[e] were killed just as they had been.

There ya go - that's Rev 6 9-11
