He don't deserve what he's getting paid as it is. He needs a pay cut not just ti help his team but so we pay what we're getting cause he has gotten worse each year.

Nah broseph that's his signing bonus you're looking at. That's stuck on the books for that amount. That was the worst part about his contract(HUGE signing bonus).

We'd have to rework his base either through standard restructure or an extension.

You sure they can't move that?

Signing bonus and the cap hit is fixed iirc, can't alter or move it at all.

Signing bonus is prorated over the first five years of the contract and as far as I remember cannot be altered in any way unless adding to it or using the june first cut rules.

That may be why they are waiting another year on redoing Drew (though an extension this year would also help a lot). It may also give the team an edge on negotiations as he will be another year older and he could have a "down" year.

And them saying they have other ways of creating cap definitely means we are seeing cuts and pay cuts. The roster to signing bonus trick is only going to put us right around the cap.

Do you know if the signing bonus has to be spread straight-line, or could a team choose to have it front, or back, loaded over those 5 years?

This just would not make sense to me. I think it would be better for all of those involved to extend him now. It reduces the cap over the next 2 years, and you can go ahead and lock him up to avoid the normal distractions. Plus, with him doing off of a bad year, the team would have better leverage in any negotiations. If he rebounds and has a record breaking year or takes the team deep into the playoffs; Drew would be in a great place to demand top dollar.

I am really not sure, and might be a dumb question, but if Drew Brees did restructure another 3 yers or so to help the cap situation, but sa retired after the next season, would he get all the guaranteed money promised in his extension, or would he lose all that money together? Or the way extension are written, would that not even be a factor in him deciding if he wanted to extend?

Isn't this good in a way, not pushing more money down the road? If he has a good year this year couldn't we extend his contract next year? I figured it was better to rework someone's contract towards the end rather than the beginning if they are still playing good. I'm hoping there isn't a lot of restructuring going on this year and more paycuts than anything, but you never know. Seems like next year alot of dead money is gonna fall off the books if we don't do a lot of restructuring this year.

So a few questions I'll answer from the last few posts.

From what I recall the signing bonus has to be spread evenly unless you choose to take the full hit in the first year (but then you just make that base salary and it works the same so no one does it).

Yes it would help both him and the team if they worked out an extension this year, BUT if we can absorb the hit this year (which it looks like they are doing) it would save even more next year and couldn't give us an advantage in negotiations.

If we do an extension and Drew retires before the end, any signing bonus and guarantees that already triggered would still be on the books. That's why guys retire after the league year starts because most guarantees kick in within the first few days.

The Falcons signed Gonzalez to a two year deal with guarantees even though they knew he was very likely to just play one more. This was to spread out the cap hit. We'll likely do that woth Brees also. It's basically a dead/voidable year to help the front year's from being heavy.

And yes it's good if we can absorb the current year's hit and wait another year, but Brees is at the end portion (last two years) of his contract. Teams usually extension with one or two years left.

I'm taking this news as a sign of many cuts and pay cuts coming, along with the roster to signing bonus conversion that we'll do to get to the cap.

Considering his on-field performance has been restructured, so should his contract.
