Thoughts? Experiences? Thinking about spending a week there but it's kind of on a whim due to the fact that I haven't left the US in five years, I don't know a ton about the place.

It's extremely poor everywhere, but very beautiful depending on where you are.

I'd say go for it. You can get a long way with some american money, the sites are amazing, just be careful where you go and what you eat.

If you're going for a week on a tour, you'll be totally fine. I've been and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Thanks for replying. This is kind of how I was feeling about it, I think I'm probably going to end up going for it.

Do not drink the water, stay away from drinks with ice in them. Watch what you eat, and oh attention to your surroundings.

Just be prepared to shite yourself. Seriously. Only place I've had it worse was Vietnam.

But have some structured and unstructured time. And I'd recommend getting a hotel in a nicer area. It's safer at night and your stuff is safer during the day. Also the food is prepared better. Spend your days exploring and traveling, but spend your nights safely inside a nice hotel in a nice area of town.

I wouldn't be going on a tour, but I just don't like to travel that way in general. I've spent 6 months traveling through Africa on my own before so I'm not afraid of Nicaragua being too poor or anything like that, but I just wanted to see if it's somewhere that can be enjoyable for a short amount of time.

The cigar factories would be epic. Some of the best cigars on the market today are out of Nicaragua.

If you can converse even basically in Spanish and have US dollars you'll be good. Leon and Masaya are nice.

Frick a Nicaragua when Costa Rica is right next door and much more better to visit and enjoy.

I lived in Leon for 3 months. Beautiful country and has everything you want.

Drugs and pussy? - San Juan Del Sur
Artsey stuff? - Leon
A shite hole city - Managua
Beautiful Picture Perfect Scenery? - Corn Island

ETA: I will say this. There are no good looking locals. Not sure what is in the water...

People talk about blowing up a new canal there, using nuclear weapons to connect the lakes to the ocean and gulf.

Not just talk anymore. They have started construction. I don't think it will ever get finished but it would really hurt Panama if it comes to fruition.
