The New Orleans Saints have a plan to get under the NFL salary cap by March 10 and an offseason checklist to improve on last year's 7-9 season, general manager Mickey Loomis told NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune in an interview at the NFL Combine.

"I wouldn't call it easy, yet we know what our plan is," Loomis said. "And we've known what it's going to be for some quite time -- in terms of just getting under the cap."

The Saints are well above the projected 2015 salary cap, although the team has as handful of bonus conversions that can quickly slice millions off their cap number.

In some ways, the Saints task is more straightforward than it was a year ago, when Jimmy Graham's status dominated the offseason, or 2012, when Drew Brees was negotiating a new deal.

The only significant decision left on the 2014 roster is Mark Ingram, who the Saints have only three weeks to sign before he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

"We're going to have a list of 20 things, give or take a few, that we want to get accomplished in this offseason," Loomis said. "Fifteen or 16 of them are before the draft and then there's four or five things we'd like to get accomplished in the course of the draft. I don't think that's different."

Loomis said he would view the team critically without overreacting to last year's finish.

"Every year we've got to look at our team with a critical eye and try not to be swayed by the emotional investment we have in any given team," he said. "That's true whether you're 11-5 or 7-9. Obviously we've got a different feeling after 7-9 and not living up to expectations that I think we all had coming into last season.

"But we have to be careful about not letting those those highs and lows -- and obviously last season was a bit of a low -- interfere with what our mind tells us we need to do."

He doesn't give the 20 steps but I have full faith in the fact that he's got this.

He said the same thing last year about the checklist and said they have it every year. He said the don't get everything but that they usually get most things.

Still cool to see for the peeps screaming about the sky falling.

i like that he said most of them will get done before the draft. so we should have some good news coming in the course of the next month or so.

Do you guys think that the Saints will let Ingram walk? Not what you WANT to happen but what you think the Saints will do.

I'll answer a little differently than what you asked...

The Saints' entire FO would be considered retarded if they re-sign him given what he will command. The Saints FO is not retarded given their history. Therefore, the Saints will not re-sign Ingram.

I guess that's the other thing I don't really know. How much is Ingram asking, give or take? I think he's underrated and underutilized and would be better served on a team that runs the ball more. But if he's asking for a lot of cash then ya, I can see him demanding so much he loses his NFL career.

I don't understand why you think he will command so much money. There are a TON of free agent running backs available this season and an awful lot of them are going to be more highly coveted than Mark. I say he sticks at a number lower than he thinks he's worth, but higher than this board thinks he's worth.

CJ Spiller, DeMarco Murray, and Justin Forsett are the only three that you could consider more coveted. 2 of them are more than likely going to be re-signed by their club (Murray/Forsett).

Spiller is just as injury prone as Ingram.

Ryan Mathews gets injured like its going out of style.

Outside of that, Ingram would probably be the 2nd or 3rd highest on that list considering age and production.

The Saints' entire FO would be considered logical and smart if they re-sign him given Mark Ingram will not "command" a lot due to his injury history, the flood of other RBs on the market, and the way RBs are used today. The Saints are usually pretty logical and smart given their history. Therefore, the Saints have a good shot of re-signing Ingram.

Bradshaw had an amazing year and can do everything you ask of him (block, run, and catch). Two issues is his age, he'll be 29 by March 19th, and his medical history. That isn't too old, considering he has never exceeded 300 carries a year, but the fact that he couldn't stay totally healthy for the past 4 years worries me. Considering the fact he ended 2013 with a neck injury, I would still be worrisome as well since one hit can re-aggravate it easily.

Vereen on the other hand I think wouldn't be sought out by say...Washington as their #1 RB whereas Ingram would. Vereen would work better in pass-oriented offenses for sure though since he is a threat catching or running, but his size is a worry for someone to be a primary RB.

Teams have seen what Ingram could do as the primary RB and although he does have an injury history (seems like its always toe), I think some team that wants a RB to build around would risk signing him over paying a boatload for Murray.

I just think Ingram finally getting the ok to be the primary ball carrier along with the lack of fumbles he's had in his career, some team is going to take a gamble on him to turn him into their RB.

I think MI's age and not being run into the ground makes him a top FA RB.
If not for the depth I would say the Saints would try much harder to keep him.

For the entire year I was saying no way we re-sign Ingram but the more I read and hear from Loomis and company I think they sign him to a lucrative deal that has a lot of performance escalators in it, back loaded in true Loomis fashion with a low cap number for this year.

I'll say 3 year 12mil.

Looks like the team will get to figure that out as Loomis has indicate the team expects to let him test the market to figure out what his value is. In other words, they appear to have no interest in overpaying at the RB position.

I was expecting some 3yr/18mil and you say that. I honestly chuckled...how cheap RBs can be had these days.
