Their last "good" season was in 2005 when they went 9-3. They've had a couple of 9-win seasons since that time but '05 was really the last year they were viewed as a legitimate national power.

Can they ever return to the glory days of Jimmy Johnson or even Dennis Erickson?

People were saying the same thing about Alabama ten years ago before Saban arrived. Same with USC before Carroll. The success of a college football program is 100% dependent on the head coach. If Miami can hire a good coach, they can win big again. If they continue to hire the likes of Coker, Shannon and Golden around, they'll continue to struggle. It's that simple.

Alabama and USC weren't hamstrung by someone like Shalala. They only care about baseball under her watch.

Alabama's situation and Miami's are night/day.

Miami's administration wants very little to do with "The U". Not to mention, destroying the Orange Bowl was a huge death nail in Miami actually having a fanbase

Shalala is 74 years old. She's not going to be there for much longer. People continue to underestimate how important a head coach is to a program. A head coach is the ONLY thing that matters in college football. Do people remember how terrible Baylor was before Art Briles? TCU and Michigan State are very mediocre programs who are now among the best in the nation because they were able to strike gold with outstanding head coaches. You can even look at a program like Missouri. They don't have the resources of a South Carolina, Florida or Georgia but they've been able to win the SEC East the last two years because Pinkel is the best coach in the division. With the recruiting base Miami has, a competent coach would make them among the best again.

I don't see it happening while they play at Sun Life or under Shalala

That doesn't lessen his point at all.

He's saying the other schools have better talent top to bottom, which they do. The better coaching is the difference.

Yes as soon as they get an administration that remembers good football = $$.

They proved they can dominate just recruiting the best from "the state of Miami" complemented with a few outside.

Miami is a facilities upgrade and a competent head coach away from being great again

I live in Miami and I honestly don't see them being back anytime soon.

Yes all it takes is a great head coach and at least an average administration. If I'm a head coach, there is no way i'm going to Miami. The fanbase is just awful. They don't care about the team winning games, and go just to drink. When fans are dancing happy down 21 to FSU at the half, you know something is wrong.

Why would I go to Miami, when I can go somewhere with fan support facilities and a stadium in place?

Meh.

Unlike other examples, Miami was an oddball when it was good because even then, the program had the support of a DII team. They played UCLA in a game that was going to decide if they played in sort of the defacto national title game on year and put about 30,000 butts in the seats of their stadium. It was a joke.

They are also MILES behind over major players in facilities.

Finally, I happened to play HS ball with a linebacker who started for three years with Miami in the late 80s. He was a really good kid. He also was COMPLETELY illiterate. So much so, that in HS, other kids had to assist him in reading the playbook. OK. "Completely" may be overstating it but, he didn't read as well as my 6 year old does now. Managed to stay eligible at the U for 3 years.

Something fishy was going on at Miami when they were good.
