Yeah, that looks horrible. Another problem (and another topic) is that those little icons permeate and convolute the interface while you are playing as well. There's always tons of little icons popping up in my view while walking around the cities. It's annoying.

I think we can conclude from this thread that we all hate games.

You know, I was just looking over what I've posted today in this thread and came to the same conclusion. "Man, I sound so grumpy."

I thought we had a pretty good and civil conversation for once.

I agree, but I do feel like this thread has sort of highlighted all the things that drive me crazy about modern video games. Maybe I should find a new hobby I can learn to hate.

Might be too late. My dad took me golfing with him a few times when I was younger and I was pretty terrible at it. I have enjoyed a golf video game from time to time, though.

If Order 1886 didn't have such large production values, you wouldn't expect the full price tag otherwise.
This is a good point. I think people see the graphics, which are impressive, and feel like it should have a long campaign to go with it to warrant a full $60 price tag.

Child of Light is a 2D, side scrolling RPG, therefore expectations are lower for both the price and the game itself.

Production values is a big part of it. That's another thing the market has decided, people want high production values.

The death of blockbuster and the introduction of digital game sales have played a huge part as well.

I'm really curious to see how that plays out in the long term. As PC's and consoles start pushing out ever more impressive visuals, you need artists to create them. This means more money poured into art, leaving less for other aspects of the game development. This will especially be true if VR takes off and everyone's walking around games of the future where textures and world and character geometry are inches from our faces.

I'm sure technologies will be invented to help with this, such as 3D scanning of real environments, but more fantastical settings will need to be created by someone. I'm either seeing games get more expensive or shorter.

Currently I feel like we are at a point where diminishing returns. Games are getting more and more expensive to make and I don't feel like the graphics are getting that much better. At this point we are getting very small gains and paying a lot to get them. this is why I like games with a unique art style like telltale games that try to do something different.

I also feel like HD has been awesome for video games because it looks great, but the wort thing for games too because of the expenses it brought. I wonder if last gen was really ready for HD either because I feel like the framerates were so bad last gen. I understand console games are usually 30fps and that is fine but often times they are below 30 or dip a lot. That is unacceptable to me.

I do think new technologies may eventually help this. I know Ray Tracing is something John Carmack has said he believes will eventually take over.

Personally I could be happy without any further graphic enhancements for a while if it meant better quality game play. I don't need a game to look like real life to enjoy it.

That is part of the problem with people wanting everything to be photo realistic. There are people still mad that Borderlands switched to that look. You even heard it as far back with Wind Waker really.

Yep and now you have dev's that seem willing to sacrifice fps to make things look prettier when it should be the other way around imo even though I struggle to tell the difference.

Is grinding time considered length of game? If so, my roommate would say destiny is about 4 billion hours in length. If you asked me, the story mode took about 6 hours and now I'm playing other stuff
