And I'm disturbed about the thought of AIC being described as heavy metal.
I saw AIC in the old Summit in Houston with Anthrax, Megadeth, and Slayer on the Clash Of The Titans tour in the summer of 1991. They held their own with the first two of those as best they could.
I personally don't consider them a 'metal' act, but when they came out with Facelift, they were hard enough to be put in that catagory by people who didn't know just how to classify their sound and before the rest of the alternative scene broke loose.
And although I don't consider Soundgarden a heavy metal band, Badmotorfinger is as metal as other 90s album and in the running for the best of that genre. It's simply slays from beginning to end.
Pantera simply changed the game got heavy metal. Slayer would be the only honest competition for them in that decade.

How so exactly? They weren't doing anything others before them had already done.
You Pantera fanboys are a product of your generation. That was a band popular during your formulative youth, thus, they are the greatest EVER!!!! OMG

This has to be a troll and Brosef Stalin has to be playing along with this guy.
90's Metal:
1. Pantera
2. Slayer
3. Helmet
4. Fear Factory
5. Sepultura
6. Down (side project of Pantera, CoC, and Crowbar)
7. Anthrax (classified as thrash)

is a term used to describe bands in the 70's. it was outdated in the early 80's and certainly now in 2015 IMO
ETA: i don't want to get into the history of metal and the sub genres of it

never cared for pantera. I don't think they are the best metal band from the 90's although i see the appeal.

We're not saying they're the most musically proficient metal band of the 90s, (at least I'm not) they were far from it. What they did was take a style of music that's totally abrasive, with absolutely no pop appeal, and made a #1 record out of it. They're the classic "gateway band". Without Pantera, I wouldn't have discovered the Morbid Angel 's and the Satyricon's and the Rotten Sound's. They grabbed your attention as a kid and it made you want to dig deeper into the genre, or pick up an instrument. They broadened the fan base, there's something to be said for that.
Plus their live shows were totally out of control.

This was always the problem with AIC; they didn't fit in any 1 box but they are damn good; RIP Layne.

Is there a more sub-genre'd genre than metal?

I ask, I listen to a ton of metal. The genres go on and on... EDM is prolly worse now that I think of it..
OT: Kudos to Hip-hop and Rap keeping it real with two

No, the best heavy metal band of the 90s is Alice in Chains. If they don't qualify, which I think they do, it is then Pantera.
Even if you count Alice in Chains, Pantera wins this contest unopposed.

Are you saying Pantera > AIC
Or Pantera is a better heavy metal band? If AIC is a heavy metal band, which I dont.

Those are 3 and 4 behind Megadeth and Metallica. Rust in Peace and Countdown to Extinction both came out in the 90's. Youthanasia and Cryptic Writings were awesome as well, but just on the strength of the first 2, I don't see how anyone can argue against Megadeth.

Perhaps Electronic music. And both have some of the most annoying fans. Don't we all know at least one metalhead from New Metairie who can classify every metal band in existence better than anyone else?
