internet vs. wi-fi speed, need help

Okay, when watching SEC+ this weekend, the pic from the chromecast would look blurry about half the time. from my ipad I downloaded an app, said the Wi-Fi was less than 1 Mbps. I tested the ATT DLS speed from work using my home email address this morning, coming in at 5.75 Mbps. I have an Aiport(?) apple router and had to upgrade my modem and got the ATT w/ Wi-Fi, but just using as a modem.
Is this "normal" reception? am I doing something wrong? router is upstairs but I checked my ipad Wi-Fi speed there, too, no difference.

WiFican be fickle. There are a lot of factors in play when considering speeds when on a wireless connection. It's typical to have fairly lower bandwidth compared to your internet speeds, but it should be able to handle 5mbps without any issues, depending on the distance from your router. You should plug into your airport (if it has ports to plug into) or your AT&T modem and run a speed test at speedtest.net.
One thing of note: You ran a speed test from AT&T at work. Are you sure that it tests your connection to your home, or did it test to your connection at work like speedtest.net would do?
Also, did you turn off the wifi on the AT&T modem, or leave it on and just use the airport wifi? It's feasible that the modem is still putting out wifi and causing interference with the Airport.

plug an ethernet cable into your modem to your pc and check your speed. If it is noticeably faster you have a router issue. If it is the same you have a slow internet issue. I have an airport router and I find it to be very fast. I normally have DL speeds of 80-115Mbps. It replaced a Belkin that only gave me 25 Mbps.

I used my home email address to test the DSL speed at the ATT site.
When I get home i'll try the speedtest thing.
I don't know about turning off the WiFi on the modem but I"ll check it out. thanks for the help.
