A guy up here at work started using a personal trainer that does cross training.

She had him do push ups to where when he went down, his chest had to hit the floor.

This makes my shoulders hurt just thinking about it, but is t this bad for his shoulders?

A true push up is where your upper arms go parallel to the ground when you go down.

It depends on how his arms are positioned and his body frame. Personally it's fine for me.

It's not hard. I can do diamond pushups with my chest hitting my hands (floor) easily.

Wait a minute, since when have push-ups not been chest to ground?

Ever since I was a kid, you started in the push-up position, went down, your chest touched the ground and you pushed back up.

I always thought you did too. I use pushup stands now, tho.

I normal push-up (military style) is arms a little wider than shoulders, go down until your upper arms are parallel to the ground.

So you being a pussy makes it wrong?? ?

In the military any push up we did that counted toward a evaluation or test or qualifications your chest had to hit a flat hand with your chest. I'm sure now a days because of pussies like you they prolly don't even do push ups anymore.

If you are tall with long arms you can easily go to floor. If you are shorter with short arms andd tight shoulders don't risk it.

Shoulders could be tight ; rotator cuff or labrum might be a problem as well

I can do dumbbell incline bench presses with 100 lb dumb bells pretty easily, but flat bench and push-ups kill my 52 yr old shoulders.

Not really. I keep the angles comfortable and don't lift heavy very frequently. Add in a good spotter and it's all good.

But the flat exercises hurt my ant. shoulders.

Depends on where your palms/arms are placed in respect to your torso. If your arms are too close to your sides then extending beyond 90 degrees (chest to ground) could place a lot of strain on the shoulder.

The Army won't count that as a pushup.

Could have very weak scapula (shoulder blade stabilizers. Could also have an AC (where your collar bone and shoulder blade meet) joint issue... Tons of complaints from many type of pushing exercises with AC joint issues.

I did 51 hand release pushups in a minute, which means my chest was on the ground every rep.

It's not that difficult.

Bump the ground to get full benefit of the rep.
