Say goodbye to the classic white boxy USPS trucks :(

The agency has scheduled a meeting with potential bidders next week in Washington. It says it will pick vendors this summer to build prototypes, which will undergo tests in 2016 before a contract is awarded in early 2017.
It could be one of the largest fleet purchases ever. According to specifications released to potential bidders Jan. 20, the Postal Service would buy 180,000 vehicles at $25,000 to $35,000 apiece, valuing the contract at $4.5 billion to $6.3 billion.
The request documents reveal a number of design flaws in the current fleet that the USPS hopes to address in the next one. The preferred upgrades include:
- Durable door design—i.e. locks and latches that can "withstand the rigors of the postal duty cycle."
- Stronger wipers—the fleet's existing windshield wipers evidently experience "fatigue" from all the rain or sleet or even snow that don't keep postpeople from getting where they need to go.
- Crevice elimination—apparently the current trucks have lots of "difficult to access" cracks where letters can accidentally slip and get lost in the mail.
- Heavyduty mats—all that stepping in and stepping out takes its toll.
- Better climate control-Keeping the semiexposed delivery person comfortable in every season requires a ventilation system that delivers heat or air "in the right quantities to the right body locations."

And let's not forget a good cup holder. Supplementary material supplies the specs here:
The vehicle shall be equipped with a standard adjustable cup holder. The cup holder shall be within reach of the 5th percentile female and the 95th percentile male in the normal seated operating position.
All exposed edges shall be rolled or provided with a radius of curvature to prevent injury.

We might be saying goodbye to the USPS before this change takes place.

I want them to upgrade the vehicles, but also keep the classic look. Is that too much to ask?

I guess birthdays, Christmases, announcements, and thank you notes have kept them afloat enough to purchase a new fleet

If they start offloading the old ones, I'm going to buy about 10 of them

I'm surprised they aren't mandating electric vehicles

How about getting them to not loose mail and deliver shite in a timely manner.
Last letter I sent to BR took 9 days to get there. One before that never got there. frick, I'd pay money to get the bastards to stop loading my mailbox with junk mail before I bought them new trucks
I have a letter that needs to be mailed today. Going to drop it off at UPS later so it actually makes it to the destination when it is supposed to. frick usps
Eta: I ordered something that was coming from Ft Worth three nights (12am) ago.....standard shipping. It got here this morning through UPS

How much effect does new services like Fed ex smart post have on thier bottom line. maybe that's why they can afford new trucks. I know most of my online orders are now getting passed of to usps for final delivery.

I thought they had no money???

USPS is probably nearing the end of the ten year effort to layoff aging employees, so they'll probably get leaner going forward.

You should put the intended destination as the return address. Then drop the letter in the mail without a stamp. I tested this in college and it worked (BR to Mississippi).
Wonder if they fixed that.

Isn't the USPS losing millions a year?
Posted on 2/13/15 at 10:43 am to When in Rome
HOLY frickING shite NO WONDER THEY'RE BROKE.
trucks worked for 70+ years without problems?
lets throw them out & buy some overly technologically advanced shite that will breakdown constantly.

its gonna cost .90 to mail something in a year

Well fwiw one of the aims is to purchase vehicles without so many cracks so that mail won't be lost
Also I can imagine that newer cars would be less likely to require as much maintenance or run into mechanical difficulties that might cause delays.
