Already this year they've had the two smallest audiences ever for college basketball on broadcast television.

quote:

Two Big East games on Fox proper (Providence-St. John’s in late January and Northwestern-Butler in December) have drawn fewer than 400,000 viewers, the lowest audiences ever for college basketball on broadcast television. According to Sports Media Watch, two recent CBS games drew at least one million viewers.

As for Fox Sports 1, the Big East isn’t attracting eyeballs either. While some games are seeing audiences over 100,000 and 200,000 viewers, ESPN has seen two of its games top over 3 million viewers and others over 2.5 million.

Fox Sports 1 had games like Marquette-St. John’s draw about 107,000 viewers and 82,000 for DePaul-Seton Hall.

In addition, Fox Sports 1 had games like St. John’s Providence last month average 48,000 viewrs, DePaul-Creighton early in January garner an average of 77,000 and a Creighton-Georgetown game just after the New Year had 58,000 viewers.

Well to be fair, this isn't exactly the "Big East" that everyone grew up on. That a game between Butler and Northwestern drew 400,000 viewers is an accomplishment in its own right.

Give it time. The new Big East is still in its infancy. Also, i think expasion shouldnt be out of the equation. I think the Big East needs a few more schools with largeer markets. They should go from 10 to 12 schools. I think they should consider adding VCU and Dayton. Both schools have solid programs with great followings. If Dayton and VCU were both in the conference this year, the Big East would be a pretty dam good conference.

Villanova 22-2
Dayton 18-6
VCU 18-6
Butler 18-6
Georgetown 17-8
Providence 17-8
Xavier 16-9
St Johns 16-8
Seton Hall 15-9
DePaul 12-14
Marquette 11-13
Creighton 11-14

Most likely a 7 bid conference

They talked to Dayton when they made the conference and Dayton turned them down. They still hope to add them in a few years.

I don't think VCU's even on their radar.

The Big East is better this year pound for pound than it was over the past decade.

They won't be. Private schools only. I was actually surprised they took Butler, since they aren't a Catholic school.

Time won't matter. It is a league made up entirely of small private schools who's only fans are alums of the school. They have no state institutions to draw sidewalk fans from.

Not even close. The OBE had UConn, Syracuse, West Virginia, Pitt at the top, and then had all the team in the top 8 of the NBE (Nova, GTown, Marquette, etc.)

Oversaturated college hoops TV/streaming market. Check.

Very different looking league than traditional branding. Check.

No easily recognizable stars in the league currently. Check.

Marketing hit without ESPN machine to back product. Check.

---

I think the league will be a decent long-term investment for Fox Sports though. The Big East is in plenty of big TV markets, and the schools themselves are all-in on hoops.

It's not the BE's fault, nobody watches anything on FS1.

They do have Georgetown and Villanova and St. John's which have decent histories and are in big markets. They also have DePaul and Marquette from big markets and decent histories.

What the big east needs is more bigger market schools like University of Detroit and Loyola Chicago.

It's a shame Notre Dame didn't join the new big east. Norte Dame should be in a total independent in football and be in a Catholic conference for all other sports and be in the WCHA for hockey or maybe be allowed in big the hockey.

With Notre Dame and more bigger market schools they would be in better shape and they need St. John's and Georgetown and Villanova to start having deep runs in the NCAA tournament.
