Pandemic Board Game

I just got the Pandemic board game and love playing it so I'm looking to try out a few other "gateway" games soon like Ticket to Ride, Dominion, Settlers and Carcassonne. Does anyone else play these types of board games? And any recommendations for getting games, or which gateway games to try first? Thanks

I absolutely love settlers. Definitely get the expansion that makes the board bigger. Wasn't really a fan of pandemic. Thought it was kind of boring.

All of those are great intro games, I'd add 7 wonders.dominion gets like solitaire unless you have intrigue or other more interactive expansion. More difficult but great games are Puerto Rico, Le Havre, Agricola, power grid.
Pandemic is great cooperative game to break up other competitive games.

My wife and I love Ticket to Ride but most of my family that's into or willing to play board games lives out of state. So, my wife and I play Ticket to Ride just the 2 of us. If you're in a similar boat, I recommend picking up the 1910 US expansion and maybe even the Switzerland / India expansion, since its 2 maps are better / more competitive for 2-players.

I recently started getting into board games after playing a few of those "gateway" games. Ticket to Ride and Settlers of Catan are two that I've played that are usually mentioned as good gateway games. Both are really good but I can't speak on their expansions.
With that said, I have to agree with fouldeliver regarding 7 Wonders. More of a card game rather than using a traditional board but definitely worth getting (or at least trying). My current favorite.

Forgot Small World... That's another pretty interesting game worth looking into.

I'd recommend Galaxy Truckers, Munchkin, and Bang! as well.

Pandemic is pretty great.
All good choices.
The thing with board is that there's a really big landscape out there to explore. I'm a big fan of Lords of Vegas as a Monopoly replacement:
The box is terrible, but the game is fantastic.
King of Tokyo... nice Yahtzee replacement. Not great playing with two though. But it's an instant win for 3+, families, etc.
Or Samurai
For a light strategy game. Might scratch a strategic itch when some of the above don't work.
There are some better, slightly more complex games for later, but that's a good start.
Later you think about things like Stone Age or Lords of Waterdeep, Agricola or Le Havre, etc.

Everyone I play ticket to ride with loves it. I have pandemic but can't play with anyone. For all the talk that ticket to ride can be picked up by a 8 yo, the learning curve with the people I play with is agonizing and pandemic will be awful

Yes and no. You have to break expectations. Modern board games are awesome, but people have no idea how to approach them, especially if board games are Monopoly and Life to them.
So it takes a little investment. You either have to introduce mechanics slowly or go with something that makes more sense.
I've seen people jump right into Pandemic. If not, then play:
or
or
I'd actually equate Flashpoint to Pandemic in complexity, but the theme makes more sense and there's a "Family Mode." I have 5 year old nephews that play and love Flashpoint.

I was implying that 8 YOs are more capable than the people I was playing with. Mainly this issues were with my dad who was all old timessy with the "this is too much work, why would anyone want to do this," complaining and my buddy's SO who liked it and kept saying she liked it and then 3/4 through the game, admitted she had no clue what was happening.

Been there Some people just won't like it. That's true. Or there's Cards Against Humanity for the rents.

Yeah that's not a fun reaction. And that's probably at least one reason why my collection grew significantly over the course of a couple of years.

I've told the story on here before. My sister brought Cards Against Humanity home for Christmas for us to play. She said she took out all the dirty cards. But then up comes fleshlight which she left in because she didn't know what it was. My mother starts asking everyone what a fleshlight is and about how she was going to google what it was because no one was telling her.

I'll add Eight Minute Empire.

How do you play cards without the dirty cards? That's 90% of the cards and fun. Might as well play apples to apples
Edit: while I'm here, where's the best/cheapest place to buy settlers with the 5-6 player expansion?

If you're a prime member, Amazon. If you want it now, Amazon. If you want to wait, Amazon or possibly Barnes and Noble on sale at some point.
It stinks, but local game stores usually have high markups.
