OK OBers, got one that has my mechanic and me confused. Working on an 2007 Ranger 3.0L V/6, about 115K miles.

Had the ole 'ticking' noise coming from the engine that started to get a little louder. Ran a scanner on it(don't have the code), showed to be a miss on #3.

Replaced all the lifters with Ford OE lifters(let the new ones soak all night in motor oil). Well, the ticking noise is still present, especially at start-up. After running the engine a few minutes the ticking eventually stops. So we put a little oil thickener in it. The noise is still there.

Noise eventually goes away but we need to get this resolved. Check engine light is back on(with same codes except different on different cylinders), could be that the lifter(s) is not priming properly, IDK.

I am reading about a TSB 04-20-8, something about the camshaft bearing cap alignment.

Any ideas?

TIA

How often did you change the oil?... You can be honest, we're all friends here. I've seen a few Rangers have clogged up oil pickups at low mileage. It could be starving for oil until it heats up and the oil flows better. Just a thought. I've had to drop the pan on 2 rangers for this in my time.,,

Not as often as I should.

Yes, it is possible that the oil pick-up tube could be stopped up a little. Will drop the pan and look at it.

It's nornally not the tube, but the screen in the pickup. If you replaced the lifters that eliminates a lot of things.( valve lash, rockers, etc.) I wouldn't drop the pan on my advice, it's a lot of work. Have you done a leak down or compression test? That's one easy check before you drop the pan.

Is an 07 Ranger with 117k miles really worth all this trouble just to get rid of a little ticking noise?

Use a mechanic's stethoscope and listen to the injector on the misfiring cylinder. They can get pretty noisy in these trucks.

Did he check cam position sensor? Could have short or fault and cam running off, and the ticking is the chain wearing on a guide.

are you sure it is not something as simple as a bad spark plug wire or boot?...could just be spark jumping to ground that you hear...

otherwise, like someone else says, just take a big screwdriver and use it like a stethoscope and you can pinpoint the noise pretty easily...
