What kind of download speed should I be getting with my wireless router?

If I plug a cable directly from my laptop through the router it gets around 60 Mbps.
On Wireless-G it hits around 5 Mbps.
On N or Mixed it hits around 2 Mbps.
I obviously don't expect it to hit near 60 Mbps, but 2-5 Mbps seems really slow. Any pointers? I've turned off all firewalls and filters on the router, and reset the router to default settings.
I have only 1 wireless device connected to the router, and I'm really close to it.

Some cheaper routers just can't handle much throughput. I had one that actually got worse throughput with a better internet connection. It was probably overheating or something.
I'd try upgrading the firmware. If that doesn't help, get a better router. I use an Asus AC-66U and I'd definitely recommend it. You can probably do fine with something cheaper than that though.

I made some changes in the settings and got it hitting over 20 Megs now. I'm content with that.

Buy a new router. I was using one of these as a wired access point going to my shop and long story short- it sucks

I went really cheap, but it's meeting my expectations at this moment.

If you have the same router...
Under Wireless:
Basic Wireless Settings - Manual, Network mode: Mixed, Channel 9, SSID Enabled, Channel Width: 20 MHz only
Wireless Security - WPA2/WPA Mixed Mode
Under Applications and Gaming
QoS - Make everything disabled.

I just got 40.5 down and 5.1 up on an older linksys. Seems like yours might have a problem.

How much bandwidth do you have?

I think I'm paying for 60. It is through Charter here in Birmingham. The only thing hardwired is an older BluRay that can stream. Older house built in the late 60s so unless I get really bored and buy some cable and want to play around in the attic and basement, it will stay that way. It just happens to be on the table under the TV in the playroom where I have the modem installed and where my router is sitting. Everything else is on WiFi.
