Homeowners Insurance Question
Posted by Saint5446 on 2/9/15 at 4:18 pm00
I am closing on a house in 3 weeks and have been getting homeowner's and flood insurance quotes. One company I'm receiving quotes for is Maison, the other one is American National Insurance or ANPAC.
The guy pushing ANPAC is very adamant that it is a much higher rated company with much more in total assets, but I'm not sure if he's just trying to push that product on me. Anyone have any experience with either of these companies?
Also, would anyone recommend just contacting local agents from any of the big guys like State Farm, Allstate, Liberty Mutual, etc?
Thanks

How's your credit?

Was a shade under 800 last time I checked. Like 780-790. Paying off student loans aggressively has helped (I think).

After the April 2011 tornados there was surveys done on the various home insurance companies. I need to the find the documentation, but Allstate was by far the worst and tried every way possible not to pay.
My house as well as my neighbors homes were damaged, and unfortunately I had Allstate. They tried to claim that even though a lot of my property was damaged by an F1 tornado. That it was the straight line winds that damaged the other standing properties on my lot. They refused to pay for anything not specifically on the house, because they don't cover straight line wind damage.
They even fought me paying for some windows that was damaged from my neighbors basketball goal slamming into it.

House is 3 years old in west lakeview. One previous owner who we know. Dwelling value right about 200k excluding value of the lot. Nothing crazy on personal property so probably looking for about 50-75k there. 5% deductible is 10K or so then.
Had a quote from American national for a 3200$ hurricane deductible which is beginning to look pretty good, with a 10k "other" wind and hail deductible.

Just buy the cheapest you can get. Any claim will be paid, if the company goes under the LA. Citizens reinsurer will pay the claim.

It really isn't that easy, there are a lot of things covered and not covered in a 40 page policy. Now if we are talking about if a tree falls on your house, will the insurance company have money to pay, that is one thing, but does the policy have a wind and hail exclusion... Is there replacement cost on the structure? The contents?
