Freeze isn't the only threat, its the frost. The usually frost date is March 15. That's about when I am comfortable planting my spring garden. I have been burned after that date though, but rarely.

Frost date is march 15 usually. We've gotten some really cold stuff late though that set back rice planting super far.

I know nothing about tomatoes however

The day after you plant probably.

If your luck is like mine on planting and camping trips.

I've always been told to wait until the pecan trees start to bud...

You can always plant a couple of plants and roll the dice, save the rest for a couple of weeks later...

Like Wick said, I always jump the gun and put a couple in.

Even if they make it, and I put some more in a month or so later. The ones I waited to plant catch the early planted ones. They just don't hardly move/grow even if they survive.

Yeah buddy, or if you are further West mesquite works as well.

I am planting early this year. It has been a mild Winter, I'm going to roll the dice. I must state that I also plant at my MiLs house. She (meaning I) will not plant early. So I do have a back up

Thundered here (Monroe) on Feb. 1st so we'll have frost on April 1st. That's what my great grandma used to tell me anyway.

This is what happens to me, I don't get in a big hurry with planting, fruit seems to come in the same time no matter what almost.

Good Friday would be as early as I would go depending upon where you live. I live an hour north of New Orleans and get nervous before April 1. Everyone always wants to get going early but often time patience pays off.

Same here. Plants that get planted early seem to get stunned and just sorta sit there. Now I just wait until around the first of April to plant. On the contrary I have a friend who plants some in elevated boxes and he usually starts getting ripe tomatoes two to three weeks before mine that are planted in the ground.

I've been planting my tomatoes the first or second weekend in March the last few years. If there's a late frost they're still small enough to cover easily. My goal is to start picking in late May and be done late June when the bugs get bad and temperatures are too high. This has worked well for me. I'm about 10 miles south of I-12.
