Haven't watched in many years until recently and didn't have anywhere near the knowledge regarding the battle that I do now when I last saw it.
Just a weird movie.
Who decided to have Sheen portray Lee as a checked out, clueless combination of an Alzheimer's patient/poet pot head?
The movie basically portrays Lee as a disassociated half wit with Longstreet playing the hero (CSA wise) that just can't bring himself to put Grandpa Lee in the nursing home so he just plays along while looking worried.

Excellent movie.
Probably one of the better war films ever made. My wife's great great great (I think) grandfather was at Gettysburg. It makes the film special.

Glory is still the best Civil War movie.

Funny you say that. I watched Glory today for the first time in many years as well and it holds up. Very good movie.

The casting and portrayal of Lee was the biggest disappointment of this movie. Was overall let down when I first saw this movie.

Sheen was a weak Lee, but I like most of the rest of the cast.
Richard Jordan in his last role as Lewis Armistead stole the movie imo.
ETA: At the end of the Pickett's charge scene when Armistead is dying and he learns Hancock has been shot, "Not both of us! Not all of us!"

It follows the plot of the book. Lee suffers from heart trouble and is unwell during the battle.

GWTW FTW.
Also, you could argue that movies like The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, The Outlaw Josie Wales, and The Long Riders are Civil War movies.
