What are the board's thoughts on this movie? Just read the first book of the series and the whole time thought "dang this'd be a tight movie", but i understand that by all accounts it was a box office bomb. Is it worth a watch?

Most of the board sci-fi fans liked the movie. It has plenty of flaws but it isn't nearly as bad as the box office receipts would lead one to believe.

Advertising killed it. Almost literally, better than its reputation imo. Visually it's fantastic. They spent a ton of money on it.

I was excited about it because I really like the books. Never watched it after it got shite on by reviewers. Maybe I will give it a try.

I really enjoyed it. Damned shame it did not do better in the theaters so we could have a sequel.

I've yet to see it, but is it similar to Waterworld in that it is a decent movie that lost a frickton of money?

IMHO, way better than Waterworld, and The Postman as well.

Huh? What now?

John carter is much better than the box office numbers. Disney did poorly marketing the movie.

Hopper as villan is decent and having a naked:

didn't hurt.

The main cast of Carter was solid and no children in it helped.

Give it a chance not bad at all if you read the book and its worth a watch to lay eyes on the scantily clad female lead, wow

I've tried to get into it a couple times but had to stop for one reason or another.

It's not a bad flick, just takes a major leap of faith from the audience, but since you've read the book, you know what that leap is (I.e. the basis what would later become Superman).

Definitely worth a watch. Entertaining adventure and visually done well enough to forget that creepy old Willam Defoe is in it.

I never would have seen it based on the horrible marketing, but the internet got me to watch and was pleasantly surprised.

It was more notable for the amount of waves it caused in Hollywood. There is a book about it that I'd like to read at some point.

I seem to recall a lot of ads about this show. Am I wrong about that?

I enjoyed it. It wasn't great but very good. What killed it in the box was simply the name of the movie and the lack of advertising leading up to the release. I doubt if most scifi fans even realized what a good scifi movie it was/is.
