Opinions on breaking in the barrel on a new deer rifle.

What's the OB's stance on breaking in the barrel on a new bolt action rifle. I've never done it and know that none of my other rifles have had it done, never had an accuracy issue. Is it more important on stainless than a blued or vice versa? I've heard strong opinions for both breaking in the barrel and against it.
ETA: Common break in:
1. Clean between every shot for the first five shots.
2. Shoot five times then clean for the next 10 shots.
3. Clean every 10 shots up to 50 shots.

Just shoot the dam thing. Never hear of breaking in a gun barrel.

That was pretty much my thought on it, but at some point you run out of things to argue about at 2:30 in the morning in a chemical plant.

Maybe if you built a competition rifle, and you want your rifle to shoot almost hole in hole at long distance then maybe. For a hunting rifle I don't think its necessary.

I've never cleaned my Rem 700 30-06. Probably >200 rounds. I got my X Bolt 300 win mag a few years ago, maybe has 50 rounds through it. It's never been cleaned either.

I am kind of OCD about cleaning a gun after using it (I even clean my Glock ). That being said, I have been told that once you zero your rifle for deer season, do not clean the barrel until the season is over. As for as breaking in the rifle barrel, just shoot it.

I've never broken in a deer rifle and almost never clean the barrels.
Unless you're shooting a whole lot, shooting junky ammo, or shooting competition, IMO it isn't necessary.
It isn't a bad thing to do, but I don't care enough to do it

I usually just clean mine after hunting season.
Its something I do on a rainy day.If I have a new gun I will clean it before I use it.They leave those barrels nasty when they are finished with them.

A buddy of mine was on the seat team and he told me that they taught them to clean their sniper rifles after every two shots on new rifles. Always run brushes the from chamber to the end of the barrel.

On brand new rifles I always use a bore cleaner and a brush tip then patch. I've been amazed at what comes out, black crud, rust ect. I believe it made them group better on the first go round.
I always used to clean my rifles well after a hunt but I read where Chris Kyle never cleaned his rifles ever?

Seems like a waste of good, used cloth, to me?
Run a patch down it when it's new.
Deer rifle, right? Wipe off the sweat, rain, dirt and blood after a couple of hunts.

Barrel break in is a myth. Just shoot it. I used to be so obsessed with the idea of breaking in the barrel but when I had a discussion with two family friends who shoot long range matches with $4000 rifles regularly, they said it was a load of BS.

I kind if thought there was going to be a bigger split in opinions.

You, sir, are a sick individual.
Although I'll admit - I clean mine every 1500-2000 rounds. But I'll also admit that I ought to clean it every 500 rounds. I'm lazy.

By all means, prior to shooting it, CLEAN the bore of a new gun very well to remove any junk left over from the barrel making process. Clean at the end of the season. I find myself using the foam bore cleaners more and more. Other than that, I don't normally clean in between unless the accuracy starts to drop off. I used to follow an extensive cleaning procedure to "break in" a new barrel, but I don't do so anymore unless the manufacturer specifically recommends it. Here's a good discussion of "barrel break in" from a well respected barrel maker. Spend the time saved shooting instead of cleaning. :-)

I'd rather wear my barrel out shooting and not cleaning
