Direction of Mudbug Brewing

This is inspired by an IG post yesterday in which MB attempted to "break the internet" with the announcement they were brewing a blueberry IPA. There was a comment responding that this was a waste of hops with the hashtag, #cantstopthegimmick.
My question to those who have tried their beers and have some knowledge relative to the direction they're taking: are they steering this thing in the gimmick beer direction, or are there some plans to make beer mavens will enjoy?
I've been to the brewery twice and want to like the place, but I've been frankly underwhelmed. With the king cake this, Boudreaux that, and now a blueberry IPA, I just have to wonder what their vision is for the future of this place. The owners have a right, of course, to brew whatever they like and execute the business plan they see fit. As a fan of local craft though, I'm just hoping they're not fueled up to go full bore gimmick.

Bayou Teche has some off the wall beers, but still produces the best beer in Louisiana. Let them do their thing is what I say.

I'll still support them, just not by buying their beer.

Fort bend brewing started up in my back yard about 18 months ago. There beer was horrible. I mean bad. They just folded. I have no sympothy

That's just the thing. I don't want to see the place fold.
I realize that for a start up, especially in Thibodaux, you have to put the asses in the seats, so-to-speak. I would hope to see them start cranking out some interesting small batch stuff to interest the people that are in it for more than the novelty though...

Yes. The competition is too stiff in the craft world now. Better make good beer.

I've been to the taproom several times since it is about 15 minutes from me
The Cafe Au Lait is a decent beer but thin
The Intercoastal IPA is very drinkable but from what many told me on this board since it is an English IPA it is malty compared to what I am used to.

I like some malty IPAs, and I agree, this one is a drinkable session beer, but nothing to write home about...

I would say that's being pretty generous. It was nice on the nose, but pretty meh beyond that, and yes, it has an incredibly thin mouthfeel...

For me the Cafe Au Lait and new Abita Machiatto were similar and they just may be personal taste preferences.
I may be heading to Mudbug tonight as well to see what is new. Tap room is beautiful really so I hope they make it.
The king Cake is a gimmick with the sugar run but that is to get people in the door, brewer (who is one of the owners) seems to be wanting to put out more beers rather than perfect what he has though. Which a lot of Thibodaux/Houma people eat up because they are lacking in craft beer.
Nvm closed tonight

I agree with the king cake and sugared rim bit. You do what you have to to get people in the place, but I think you need to develop a better offering for the real beer drinkers.
Did you have any of the imperial choco king cake stout, or whatever they had on cask? If so, what were your impressions of that one?
It really is a good looking place, and I enjoy the atmosphere as well. I just hope they start turning out some substance to back it up. Whoever was manning the IG account lashed out at the guy calling their stuff gimmicky, but I think they'd be wise to take it as constructive feedback.

Nope I haven't had, it has been a few weeks since I went because they were closed awhile after running out of beer
They are a bit gimmicky, I mean their stuff is drinkable but many of the other craft breweries blow them out of the water.
They need to get a stranglehold of that local market of Thibodaux/Houma (already have a friend who swears Au Lait is best beer he has ever had)

Is his name David?
Also paged you in the FBD thread re: 2014 Abyss.

Nah not David.....
I think Mudbugs is trying to put out as many beers as possible right now instead of focusing i. What they have. Of course brewer doesn't find anything wrong with what they have as well which hurts, imo from conversations.

I know Chris, Jeff, Caddie, Amanada, Craig, and LB were disappointed

Sounds to me like their gimmicks are working. I'm sure the number of mavens in that part of the state are slim to none. I would imagine you got to make these beers to keep the doors open because the mavens aren't going to keep them open. Canebrake is a pretty gimmick beer that taste like shite but it's a money maker that helps support the maveny beers. I'd give these guys some time. You not going to turn coonasses into mavens over night.

You don't have to look further than the name to see that the entire operation is a gimmick.

How is Canebrake a gimmick beer? It's a wheat ale. Seems like a good fit for a region that historically has been populated by BMC drinkers.
Is Abita Amber a gimmick beer? Dat Purple Haze absolutely is.

A new Louisiana tradition, Canebrake was the first commercial beer in the world brewed with locally-made Steen's sugarcane syrup!
