Thoughts about restaurant writers/critics etc getting free meals

So let’s discuss the idea of restaurant writers/critics, etc getting free meals from the places they visit. I was reading facebook this morning and saw a friend of friend posting about a writer(probably more of ad sales rep than a writer) coming into a restaurant around Laffayette with their whole family. Runs up a big bill with drinks and everything and then demands to have the meal comped.
Restaurant owner calls the magazine owner afterwards to complain and the cock sucker ends up trying to say that the restaurant owner was in the wrong and should be thankful for getting a visit. Basically bitched out the guy for even calling to complain.
Seems like a total bullshite move by this 008 magazine or whatever it’s called. I knew someone that worked for Gambit down here and he said they rarely ever accepted a free meal. Fitzmorris claims he pays for just about every meal he has. He might get some freebies every now and then, but I don’t think even his ego would allow him to demand free stuff.

I think they should have to pay like everyone else

Free meal for the reviewer (and possibly a guest) would be OK if and only if the review was pre-arranged and/or at the request of the restaurant. With this being disclosed by the author. To take your family in, drink alcohol, and then demand the meal be comped. frick no.
Owner should have said NO and told Editor he would crucify the magazine if they dared to give him a negatve review. That stuff cuts both ways.

A few thoughts
It's apparent this "guy" was not a writer. Freebies are highly frowned on in the world of journalism. It can easily cloud your judgment (free meal = more favorable review)
Plus, if this guy was a legit writer, chances are he wouldn't be paying anyway. If you're an actual food critic writer (unless independent), the employer/newspaper/magazine is likely footing the bill since you technically are working

I know Ryan and those guys in Lafayette. Terrible what this "critic" tried to do. Now he is dealing with the magazine owner who is being equally unethical.

If it's as you say it was, then this dude needs to be curb stomped.
The first step should have been to call the police as soon as he refused to pay and started making demands. Second step is to call the local news to publicly crucify the guy. Third step would be to tell other fellow restaurant owners to be on the look out for this douche bag. If none of that works, call the Equalizer.

What restaurant does he own?
I'm guessing this magazine is nothing more than a junky small local advertizing deal?

If they don't pay, then the review is suspect IMO.

Exactly. Anyone under the employ of a reputable publication should not be accepting free meals or products from any business they're tasked to review. That's something "bloggers" do. And they're usually pretty transparent when they let the fact that they didn't have to pay for the product influence the substance of their review.

Any of you watched The Million Dollar Critic on BBC America?
Pretty good show. From what I've seen he is a straight forward reviewer. The one I last saw he was in a top restaurant in Toronto and asked to go into the wine cellar and choose his own bottle of wine, not knowing how much it was....luckily he didn't get one of the most expensive ones, but still his bill was like $500, and you paid it himself.
